Curiosamente, este 3 de diciembre, Día de la Medicina Latinoamericana, no he logrado encontrar ninguna fotografía acerca de la atención de nuestros galenos a los pacientes de cólera en Cuba.
Por supuesto, dirán algunos, no es posible fotografiar lo que no existe. A juzgar por la prensa oficial y en ausencia de reportes médicos contrastables, resulta que lo que está circulando en Cuba -especialmente en la región oriental de la Isla- no es cólera, sino un brote de infección intestinal aguda. Otra frase eufemística que meses atrás definió el cólera en los medios oficiales fue infección intestinal por contaminación hídrica, que también en su momento se declaró controlado y eliminado.
Hoy amanecimos con un hipócrita jubileo en los medios de prensa. El noticiero matutino de televisión se congratulaba con la fecha de los médicos y enumeraba una vez más los innumerables logros y sacrificios de los profesionales de la salud, mientras los cubanos de la Isla seguimos expuestos continuamente al peligro del cólera y el dengue, dos epidemias que ya se han cobrado muchas vidas y que permaneces ocultas, solapadas bajo los discursos triunfalistas del gobierno y el silencio cómplice de las autoridades sanitarias.
No hay nada que celebrar este 3 de diciembre. En realidad, deberíamos lamentar la ausencia de libertades que mantiene encerrado en una cárcel del régimen a Calixto Ramón, el primer periodista independiente que dió a conocer la presencia del cólera en la provincia de Granma y en otras regiones de Cuba, quien cumple 22 días de huelga de hambre. Tendríamos que lamentar la pérdida de vidas humanas por la irresponsabilidad criminal del gobierno y de los dirigentes de la salud, la indefensión de este pueblo frente a la insalubridad galopante, deberíamos estar de luto por la muerte de la ética médica.
¿De qué valen el talento profesional, el sacrificio de muchas horas de trabajo en pésimas condiciones, la lejanía del país y de la familia por parte de los internacionalistas si nuestros médicos son incapaces de cumplir con la obligación ética de hacer público el riesgo que enfrenta la población?¿Desde cuándo el compromiso político-ideológico puede subordinar el deber sagrado de quienes una vez juraron protegernos?
En la actualidad solo unos pocos médicos se atreven a superar sus miedos y comprometer sus intereses personales y profesionales para alertar a sus pacientes sobre las epidemias silenciadas por las políticas gubernamentales. La mayoría calla.
Este 3 de diciembre nos recuerda que quizás queden muy pocos médicos con decoro en este país, otrora ejemplo de atención médica y que por muchos años contara con un magnífico sistema sanitario de atención primaria. Por el momento, la callada docilidad de los que en su día hicieron el juramento hipocrático constituyes una profanación a la memoria del ilustre médico cubano, Carlos Juan Finlay, nacido en esta fecha en el ya lejano 1833.
