En el transcurso de la última semana, el colega Carlos Valhuerdi, periodista independiente de la web Cubanacán Press, me ha estado comunicando algunos acontecimientos recientes ocurridos en la ciudad de Santa Clara, que se iniciaran en la noche del 7 al 8 de mayo último, tras la muerte de Juan Wilfredo Soto como resultado de la brutal golpiza que le propinaran cuatro policías uniformados y que –con inhabitual premura– fue negada por las autoridades gubernamentales en una nota de prensa publicada el lunes 9.
Con fecha 12 de mayo, Granma publicó adicionalmente a página completa (pág 3) un artículo titulado “Cuba desprecia la mentira”, con algunos testimonios –entre ellos el de una inexplicablemente sonriente hermana del recién fallecido Soto– para “demostrar” la falsedad de la golpiza. Siempre hay personas inescrupulosas prestas a someterse al miedo, no importa si son familiares o no de las víctimas de la represión.
Lo que no ha reportado Granma es la muerte de uno de los policías participantes en la golpiza, ocurrida en la noche del 11 de mayo, a consecuencia de un disparo a la cabeza que se realizara por su propia mano en la tarde del propio domingo 8. Según testimonios que no publica Granma y que me ha revelado el colega Valhuerdi, vía telefónica, el policía se llamaba Alexéi Herrero, y se disparó en el baño de su propia casa, ubicada en un lugar de las afueras de Santa Clara conocido como Callejón de San Antonio, en la carretera de Camajuaní, después de su regreso de la segunda reunión a la que había sido convocado por la Instrucción Policial a propósito de la muerte de Soto. El velorio de Alexéi ¬–un individuo con tendencia a la violencia, según testimonios–, se realizó bajo un fuerte operativo policial en la funeraria de Santa Clara (antigua funeraria Camacho), operativo que se extendió hasta la propia vivienda del fallecido.
La tensión ha reinado en la ciudad capital de Villaclara, con una sostenida vigilancia sobre los opositores, amenazas y hasta represalias. Héctor Bermúdez, miembro del grupo liderado por Guillermo (Coco) Fariñas, fue apedreado después de hacer declaraciones públicas acerca del operativo policial que se desató en el hospital provincial Arnaldo Milián y la presión ejercida sobre los médicos, cuando fue ingresado Juan Wilfredo Soto, y de lo cual él fue testigo presencial. Bermúdez sufrió una herida en la cabeza, por la que tuvo que recibir suturas, cuando se dirigía de regreso a su casa.
El pasado viernes 13 todavía Santa Clara no había recuperado su tranquilidad. Valhuerdi nuevamente me comunicó un incidente ocurrido ese día en el mismo parque Vidal, en pleno centro de la ciudad. Esta vez un grupo de ciudadanos de a pie –no opositores– orquestaron un verdadero mitin de repudio espontáneo a Amado Gómez Rodríguez, uno de los testigos presentados por el periódico Granma, vendedor de flores en los alrededores del referido parque, quien había declarado que Soto no había recibido ninguna paliza “como referían los enemigos de la revolución”. El grupo en cuestión estuvo motejando como “chivato” y otros epítetos por ese estilo a Amado, a puros gritos, hasta que la policía uniformada disolvió pacíficamente a los enfurecidos santaclareños, sin aplicar un golpe, una detención ni una multa siquiera. Lección aprendida o prudencia del momento, lo cierto es que en Cubanacán el horno no parece estar para pastelitos.
Como colofón, este domingo 15 la Virgen de la Caridad llegó a Santa Clara, siguiendo la ruta de la peregrinación de la imagen por toda Cuba con motivo del 400 aniversario de su aparición, a celebrarse en 2012. Se dice que el recibimiento a la Santa Patrona de los cubanos en Santa Clara fue apoteósico, con una congregación masiva de creyentes y no creyentes que asistieron bajo la fuerza simbólica de su significación en el imaginario popular: es, por así decirlo, la Virgen de la Libertad de Cuba desde su presencia en los campos mambises. Los cubanos, tras medio siglo de ilusiones rotas, están buscando una fe que los una y los sostenga.
Pese al duelo que significa la pérdida de vidas humanas debido a la violencia incitada desde el poder, es de desear que las autoridades hayan recibido, fuerte y clara, una señal inequívoca: los pueblos, tarde o temprano, se hartan de sus represores. La legitimación de la violencia, como Lineamiento no escrito entre los acuerdos del VI Congreso, podría en un día cercano volverse en contra de la dictadura. No olvidar aquel sabio refrán que reza así: quien siembra vientos, recoge tempestades.
