“The main thing is conscience … not science”
This short video of Juan Vela, former minister of High Eductation, has come into my hands. A meeting with some of his subordinates in Ciego de Ăvila province was the setting for this declaration about the order of priorities in Cuban universities. I am sure that these words, authoritarian and simplistic, said in front of the cameras, did not cost him his job.
Perhaps it was the opposite that motivated his replacement by Miguel DĂaz-Canel BermĂșdez. Who knows if the ex-minister, when he applied his maxim that, âthe principle here is the conscience, itâs the Revolution⊠not the science,â didnât do it with the verticality one expects from a member of the Communist Party. He goes, and now, free of these responsibilities, can finally realize his old dream of being a cardiologist.
I will try to get a video with an English translation on it. In the meantime, Juan Vela, at the end of the video says that he wanted to be a cardiologist, but no, he’s here, and the main thing is “the conscience and the Revolution… not science.”
