The Good Intellectual

Lost in the metaphor, the good intellectual avoids approaching the reality through which the universal will make his work more transcendent than the local. He hides, in some symbolic passage of his theatrical script, in the parable of a verse, or in the barely visible little figure in the corner of the canvas, that dose of criticism that later will allow him to boast that he ânever remained silent.â He knows censorship very well, the simulation and fear that corrode your work, but he responds angrily to whomever reminds him. What do you want? That I go work in construction? He spits at anyone who criticizes his excessive concessions. He prefers to address the erotic rather than the political, the past before the present, to recreate the classics rather than his contemporaries. Once his name was on the black list, and the gray list, but now they honor him and give him medals. He has Internet access from his own home, and for a few years now has enjoyed an all-expenses paid weekend at a hotel in Varadero.
The good intellectual has a file at the United States Interest Section, in hopes of a visa, but he went that day in hat and sunglasses hoping no one would recognize him. He lectures and makes the rounds of the universities in the âEmpireâ while trying to modulate his speech, there and here, lest it be outdated in one place and too liberal in the other. When foreign delegations come he likes to be close by, bring home some visitor, play on their emotions a little so theyâll offer him an invitation to any place in the world… because at the end of the day, âno one can live here.â He has a satellite dish well hidden in the last room, but speaking with his colleagues he pretends he saw the national news last night, or the Roundtable last Tuesday. A friend passes him copies of those prohibited pages he would never have dared to enter from his own computer.
The good intellectual is very quiet while waiting for a response to his exit permit, and when he returns he behaves well so theyâll authorize his next trip. It seems that every kind of activism or obvious political positioning is for those who donât have his talent of the pen or the brush. He looks over his shoulder at those who waste their time in discussions of âreforms,â âchanges,â or other fleeting trifles. But when he takes a couple of drinks he wonders if he has scaled the artistic heights because of his real talent, or because of the massive exile of those who could have been his competitors. Saved in a some drawer is that song he composed with his guts hanging out, that poem where he got totally naked, or that screaming mouth he once painted. Because a âgood intellectualâ is never discomposed, never involved in social passions, never lets himself drift into the street.

Griffin..is right;..big businessmen of Canada are Cuba and…the billioners of usa were replaced with billioners of canada…cooperating with cuban millioners…before of the right wing but now of the left…wing where you can buy cheap everything in a country in big need(under pressure, blockade) living a poor desperate life.So Cuba is in big business net…for 100 years and maybe from the same big corporations running North America
Cuba was a country… planned to do big business as a banana republic colony…(fruits,sugar,minerals,tourism,oil) and where the leftist billioners and millioners robbed those of the right…there and this is what has happen now in europe and asia…and north and south americas…a communist billioners world elites united…as 1%….but as we know both left-right teams were of one corporation…which is going to be called world corporation …and will be run by the generation Y …as progressive one..look the photo here;

John the one #333 - Gee, I didn’t realise I couldn’t actually thump someone through a computer! Thanks for pointing that out. You obviously don’t understand metaphorical language, idiot. And calling me Little Johnny is about as childish as it gets. Possibly I am little compared to you, no doubt you’re a great big fat overbloated blob.
Febrero 21st, 2012 at 09:31
I’m always struck by how the attitudes of folk like John the One resembles those who used to support Hitler (and Stalin and Mao and Pol Pot)
For these people Disney World is the root of all evil, and dictators who kill millions are peace-loving humanitarians.
I’m curious what motivates these people? Is it the attraction of power? The fantasy of killing off large numbers of people they don’t like?
Febrero 21st, 2012 at 09:21
John the One has discovered that the US army has squadrons. And that this is the “freshest news.”
He then informs us that Iran, which has carried out bombings, including bombings of children, in dozens of foreign countries (because they are infidels), is the harmless victim of a US conspiracy. They just tried another massive terrorist attack on US soil, but the US shouldn’t be concerned. Like Nazi Germany, they are a peace-loving nation who mean no harm.
Thanks for all the info.
This somehow is related to Yoani’s article of course?

The freshest news from the US of A is that our elite squadrons can attack on any target in Latin America. The targets have already been identified and they represent a threat to Us of A national security.
Among the targets are effectively teh whole countries such as Cuba, Ecuador and Bolivia. The reason?
They are “friends” with Iran.
Only a mo-*n can defend such a statement. The idiots who tailor our foreign policy are conveniently forgetting that there are children in those countries. Children who go to school and have no idea that we are planning to slaughter them in the name of “our safety”. Mothers and fathers that work hard to feed and clothe their children and have no time to even think about the US of A.
These countries are not even equipped to be a threat in any shape or form to the US of A.
But they are “friends” with Iran. And we all know that Iran is, all of a sudden, the bad news for us. Bas-*-*ds float on oil that we want and they want a fair price for it. No can do.
A little known policy of US of A is to strive to buy as much of the world’s oil, to ensure the continuum of our apparently superior economy a little while longer, before we too run out of it.
Screw it. Just kill those little slimy bas-*-ds now. They will live in poverty all their short lives anyway.
Our interests and safety are way more important that these useless lives.

I must be a citizen there and I may need a home…and a job…to buy and eat some food before I write the new program of the new party of the 99%…
Some of the important point in the program will be to demolish all the big old cities and build highrise buildings everywhere around the island shores and put all the 11 million Cubans there to live, get free drinks, rum…and work everyone 4 hours in the farm to produce fresh food and entertain and stay in the beach and travel all the time with the cars rented for $10 per day and be paid everyone $50-100 per day…to travel and enjoy so the Cuba’s paradise…Who will be against new program?

What about if the 99% of the Cubans create a new party called with the same name; ‘ El Cristo”…will the 1% refuse such a name…? If yes than what is going on with Cuba….? Is there a plan for Cuba to be a foot for the international communist armies in the east to come and enter soon the west..? I yes…than the dissidents are in danger and the 99% and even the pope should be careful and not stay more than 1 day there…This may be the reason of the 50 years blockade…but why to spend time with Cuba when the communists are already running the whole North and South America… but maybe Cuba is not in the western communist block yet…but why?

Stop lying Cube Libra, nobody denies there are a few direct-trade restrictions on some US-based business, such as the commercial carriers, and that is what the “embargo” is all about.
What people are truthfully saying is that there is no direct effect on the Cuban economy.
The US is the 5th biggest trading partner of Cuba, and Castro could make them number one if he signed more deals with US companies (like the telecoms)
Most importantly, it is the private influx of cash from the US that is propping up the Cuban economy.
On balance, the “embargo” probably helps tourism, as the gullible anti-Americans, including the millions of US leftists who have visited Cuba, are more willing to put up with no toilet paper and grotesque cuisine when they believe “the embargo” is the cause.
Brief history for Marxists:
It is the US that embargoed Batista and helped Castro come to power. It is the US government (not the Chinese or Russian governments) that offered free food and medical aid to Cuba in the 1990s when many Cubans starved. Castro refused, he’d rather see Cubans starve. And his fans refuse to speak the truth, they’d rather rewrite history.

REUTERS: Cuban dissident testifies by phone to U.S. Congress
(Reuters) - One of Cuba’s leading dissidents, Oscar Elias Biscet, testified by telephone from Cuba on Thursday to the U.S. Congress and said the international community did not seem to understand that human rights violations continued there.
“The Cuba in which I live is a society full of fear,” Biscet said, speaking from the U.S. interests section in Havana to a joint meeting of two House of Representatives subcommittees.
“The human rights violations need to be expressed further to the international community, because they seem to be not getting the point, or understanding that this is really happening,” he said, speaking through an interpreter.
The connection was lost and restored several times as Biscet’s voice was broadcast via speaker phone to a Capitol Hill hearing room.
Biscet, 50, a medical doctor, was released last March as one of the last of 52 political prisoners President Raul Castro promised to release in an accord with Cuba’s Catholic Church.
He had been first arrested in the 1990s for organizing meetings, and was jailed several times. After his fourth arrest in 2003, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison as part of a crackdown on opponents known as Cuba’s “Black Spring” that strained the Communist-led island’s international relations.
Biscet said that he had been beaten and tortured in prison; as a result, he said, his face was disfigured and his foot broken.
“Violations of human dignity” are systematically committed against all people who are incarcerated in Cuba, he said.
Among abuses he had “suffered or observed” were tortures in which naked prisoners had their hands handcuffed to their feet for 12 to 24 hours, or were handcuffed with their hands over their heads and suspended with their feet barely touching the floor for similarly long periods.
He also described abysmal prison conditions with no clean drinking water, no ventilation, and no toilets for prisoners.
For Biscet’s opposition to Cuba’s government, President George W. Bush awarded him in absentia the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007. Cuban authorities view dissidents as mercenaries working for their archenemy, the United States.
The United States has maintained an economic embargo on Cuba for 50 years in order to pressure the Communist government on the island, which lies 90 miles (145 km) south of Florida.
Cuban dissidents have said there are still at least 60 people behind bars for political reasons, including some convicted of boat and plane hijackings and spying.
Asked whether he feared re-arrest because of his testimony to the U.S. Congress, Biscet said: “Everything is possible.”
He said he intended to continue non-violent efforts for change under the Castro government. “We cannot wait for someone to die to create change. We will create change on our own.”
He said he hoped that Pope Benedict would lobby for more freedoms, including freedom of speech, when the Pope visits Cuba at the end of March.
“We hope that his coming will bring great change to our country,” Biscet said.

MIAMI HERALD: Who are Cubaâs best-known Catholic critics? - By Juan O. Tamayo
One is a Cuban priest who wrote letters criticizing Fidel and RaĂșl Castro. Another is a Catholic layman who collected 25,000 signatures seeking change. The third edited a church journal muzzled under government pressures.
RodrĂguez, 59, has long been a thorn in the side of a government that was officially atheist from 1962 to 1992, and to this day bans Catholic schools and requires prior permits for street processions.
Sometimes called the âpeopleâs cardinal,â he first made headlines in 1994 with a letter blaming Fidel Castro for the islandâs financial and social crisis, and urging him to open a dialogue with dissidents and exiles.
The church sent RodrĂguez to study in Spain in 1996 â supporters say church officials wanted to protect him, at the same time get him out of the way â and he returned just before Pope John Paul II visited Cuba in 1998.
In 2007, State Security agents burst into his Santiago parish, Santa Teresita del Niño JesĂșs, to beat and arrest at least 15 young dissidents. The barrel-chested, blunt-talking RodrĂguez branded the raid a âterrorist party.â
Cubaâs best-known Catholic dissident is PayĂĄ, 59, who founded the Christian Liberation Movement and launched the signature-gathering Varela Project â neither recognized by the government.
One Vatican official praised him as a âcommitted Catholic who wishes to work within the systemâ in 2003, and said he had urged Cuban officials to âcultivate PayĂĄ as a âsoft oppositionist,â?â according to a WikiLeaks cable
PayĂĄ won the European Parliamentâs Sakharov Prize in 2002, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize more than once and was briefly greeted by Pope John Paul II at the end of a public audience in Rome in 2003.
A top agronomist with a state tobacco enterprise in western Pinar Del Rio, Valdés was demoted in 1996 when he became editor of Vitral, a provincial Catholic magazine that often criticized the government.
Government officials regularly demanded Vitral tone down its reports.
One U.S. diplomatic dispatch from Havana reported ValdĂ©s had alleged that Ortega âmaneuveredâ to force him to quit Vitral in 2007 by replacing Pinar del Rio Bishop JosĂ© Siro RodrĂguez, who supported Vitral but was retiring, with a weaker Bishop Jorge Serpa. ValdĂ©s âasserts [Ortega] is in bed with the Cuban regime. In his estimation, Bishop Serpa, therefore, is as much of a regime figure as Cardinal Ortega, and not to be trusted,â the cable added.
Another cable quoted a Vatican official as saying that the Cuban government âmust be happy because the Church did its dirty work for itâ in the ValdĂ©s case. Vitral curtailed its criticisms of the government under Serpa.
ValdĂ©s, who said he prefers to be described as âa Catholic who thinks differentlyâ rather than as a âdissident,â now publishes the digital magazine Convivencia â Fellowship â and remains a steadfast government critic.

Oh really? Autographed in the blood of his victims? Now that would be telling.
Febrero 19th, 2012 at 22:04
I have to read what Fidel says about his humanitarian efforts in Angola:
Re: Counting Cuban Atrocities, letter to the editor, Aug. 18.
As a former United Church of Canada missionary to Angola, I can attest to Cuban atrocities even more horrific than those mentioned by letter-writer Andrew Galloway.
In 1975, the Cuban army arrived in Angola to support the Russian-backed Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). They first went north and turned their guns on Holden Roberto’s National Front for the Liberation of Angola, then wheeled around south to attack Jonas Savimbi’s National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). Eventually, after destroying our central mission station in Dondi, they arrived at the Kavango Leprosarium. After ordering all of the lepers, their families and their helpers into their huts, they set fire them on fire, burning everyone to death. Any who emerged were machine-gunned. This was attested to by one of our pastors, who saw it all from the bush where he was hiding.
Ten years later I travelled to Jamba, UNITA’s capital in the southeastern part of the country. I was taken to a camp occupied by hundreds of survivors of Cuban poison-gas attacks. Nerve gas, when it does not kill outright, leaves the victim with a mind that has been completely addled and, at times, limbs that no longer function. It was the most horrific sight that I have ever witnessed.
Now that Fidel Castro is reaching the end, it is my fervent wish that he burn in Hell.

Library leader threatened, harassed
HAVANA, April 25, 2011 (Ana Aguililla/Roberto de JesĂșs Guerra PĂ©rez) - Omayda PadrĂłn Azcuy, the national coordinator of the Reinaldo Bragado Bretaña Library Network, complains that she is being threatened and harassed by the State Security police. Every Wednesday her library hosts literary discussions with intellectuals and neighborhood residents. The library, located in her home at #5 18th St. in the Vedado district, holds about a thousand volumes, many of them by authors censured in Cuba, including Ălvaro Vargas Llosa, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Reinaldo Arenas and Carlos Alberto Montaner.
THE FRIENDS OF CUBAN LIBRARIES
“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
- Article 19, Universal Declaration of Human Rights
“Sometimes certain books have been published, the number does not matter. But as a matter of principle not a single book of such kind should be printed, not a single chapter, not a single page, not a single letter!”

Vanity publishing, Cuban style
Fidel Castro’s My LIfe, written with Ignacio Ramonet, soon descends into hagiography
http://www.guardian.co.uk/book.....y.features
To say that Ramonet is an uncritical interviewer would be an understatement. Occasionally, he poses a more difficult question to Castro, who has ruled a single-party state for nearly 50 years, mentioning that some dare to call the Cuban leader a ‘dictator’ and raising the question of the political repression that has been a persistent feature of his rule. Yet as the introduction makes abundantly clear, the author is a fan.
Well, well, well. If the book can’t even get a favourable review from the left wing Guardian, you know it’s a turkey. Perhaps the reason the book is not widely available is because nobody but an idiot (ahem…) would want to read the damned thing.

Don’t worry, Cube Libra, Fidel’s memoirs will come out in English, just like Charles Manson’s did. You are free to read the collected works of Fidel, Adolf and Charlie in Canada.
Hitler and Manson are still popular among some sub-cultural groups. Am I correct in saying you belong to the rich imperialist Marxist socio-economic class?

I have just bought my copy of Mr. Castro`s memoirs. Strangely enough it was only available in French right now where I live. I couldn`t wait for the English version to come out so I bought it anyways. I have just finished the first chapter, and already I can state rhis book is a masterpiece. It shows you what really crossed his mind, and contrary to certain beliefs, you can see how peace loving he was and the reasons that brought him to the revolution.
I suggest the skeptics and backstabbers in here buy it also and find out who Fidel Castro is. It comes autographed by him. And it comes with several of the letters that were exchanged between him, El Che, Camillo Cienfuegos, and many others during the revolution. Pleasant reading.

Cuba and USA,the two enemy-friends who fought, rebelled against Spain, behind which was maybe the Church sheperds…both belong now to the Church again…returning to its flock and foil, because like many presidents of USA.. also Castros…were the Church’s boys, even when they were out, living as rebelles in their own…in the nature… under the God vision.
As we know God is the only king, the one over the life inside and outside the Church … so all the men; of Cuba,Usa,world and Church…inclueding the pope serve to the same king of the world…and noone can rebelle, ignore, replace the Creator…so all you dummies who fight still each other are just actor-players in the scene…which God,the director, creator is directing, playing and watching… you all as blind are its crew…or workers…or servants. Now is a big mess in every country and they all are going insane…so you are all right what you say about each other…because you are all playing the same game behind your different flags and cloths and masks and you all should learn the truth now so when God want the play changed, you cant refuse, ignore
Next post of Yoani should be for the 99% masses, not just 1% of a small group, bum individuals or intellectuals…because 99% needs its own new party or organization to build New Cuba in their vision as a gathering 99%..as the mind and voice of Cuba and Cubans…because the communism was imported and was not cuban, made in cuba but maybe was created by the Church agents to suffer for a while the the rebelles so they can return back to her… Yet the story ends that all…inclueding the church…and their armies and all the nations…return to God,the only King.
Yoani as intellectual…should work for God only and she should tell to cubans to put some fast speed internet to connect fast all Cuba with underwater wires with the rest of the world net because cuban internet is now like connecting with hell…it is so horrible and out of service most of the time there…because if the world martial law will shut down the world internet we need the fast internet in cuba so we can have at least better internet when we come there in the paradise…after the twin devils; world communism and capitalism die,in fact they are both dead already and stink so much now…even the skies and God smell them… and the dead world humanity’s cadaver, dead body remains;all the so called royal kings, monarchs, noble men, their bureaucrats and mercenaries and the blind zombie masses…all parts of the present insane…dead humanity…both 1 and 99% which need a rebirth now…because they are all dead…and they cant stay dead forever…

Ok Ok I have come to terms with myself. I never thought I would speak these words but reality has awaken me. Mr. Fidel Castro, you and your revolutionary government have been found guilty.
Mr. Castro you have been found guillty of driving off the imperialist vampire who was draining the blood and life from your country. You have been found guilty of allowing any citizen who didn`t approve of your government to freely leave the island if they wanted. You have been found guilty of educating 100% of Cuba`s population. Guilty also for having eliminated extreme poverty from you country and making sure everyone has enough food. Guilty for providing health care to every citizen of Cuba. You have been found guilty of making Cuba one of the most, if not “the” most, safest countries to live in in the whole world. You have been found guilty of “crimes against humanity” for providing third world countries with your experienced doctors.
You are Guilty as charged Mr. Castro. And of course any one of these crimes is punishable by the death penalty.

The Washington Post: A Risky Route to Freedom - Friday, July 16, 2004
LA CEIBA, Honduras — Nine rafters slipped out of Cuba on May 3, guided by a full moon and buoyed by hope and ocean currents. After two days at sea, in the black and cold of 2 a.m., a screw shook loose from their old outboard and it sputtered to a stop. As the screw plunged into the shark-filled depths, their spirits sank with it.
“That was the moment I thought we were going to die,” said Luis Machado Hernandez, 42, a Cuban hospital manager who said he was fleeing the unbearableness of existing on $10 a month in a place where a pair of child’s shoes costs three times that much. But Machado and the others kept going, and for the next five weeks their remarkable voyage twisted and turned on the kindness and greed of strangers.
A day after their engine failed, they washed up on the Cayman Islands and were locked up with murderers for a month. There, as they recalled later, they bribed themselves free and set off again into the mountainous waves. Finally, on June 5, they landed in this Central American country, whose welcoming immigration policies have made it the hottest new haven among Cuban refugees.
“The Honduran people know what the Cubans are suffering, that they are being repressed and that they don’t have liberties,” said Ramon Romero, Honduras’s director of immigration, who said his country welcomed Cuban boat people and would never return them to Fidel Castro, now 45 years at the helm of the communist island.
Far more Cubans attempt the 90-mile trip to Florida than the risky 500-mile voyage to Honduras. But because most rafters get caught by Cuban authorities or the U.S. Coast Guard in the heavily patrolled waters off Florida, an increasing number desperate to flee Cuba’s miserable economic conditions are pointing their rafts toward Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere. Romero said at least 100 Cubans came to Honduran shores last year, more than twice the number in 2002. As the numbers keep increasing, he said, Honduras is recruiting families to take them in. “Hondurans identify with them and want to help them whenever they can,” Romero said.
Rafters interviewed in Honduras said word had spread that this country is a safer bet than Cuba’s other neighbors, including Belize, Mexico and the Cayman Islands, which routinely return the refugees to their homeland.

International law and other considerations on the repatriation of Cuban balseros by the United States- By Maria C. Werl
The Cuban government prohibits leaving the national territory without prior government authorization. âIllegal exitâ is punishable with one to three years in prison and financial penalties.1 The term balsero (ârafterâ) typically depicts Cubans who escape or attempt to escape from their island-country usually in makeshift rafts, small boats, and other primitive vessels. A small number of Cubans is able to command seaworthy vessels owned for the most part by the State and in recent years a growing number of escapees have been leaving in fast boats operated by smugglers. In this paper the term balsero will denote all those who flee Cuba by any sea-faring means.

YOUTUBE: Christmas Dreams of Cuban Rafters Crushed By Cruise Ship “Rescue” - On December 21, 2011, a Princess cruise ship “rescued” 20 Cubans, including 9 children. CBS affiliate KPHO Channel 5 in Scottsdale Arizona reports that three families from ages 3 to 80 were picked up by the Princess cruise ship on its way back from the Panama Canal. A Scottsdale man vacationing on the cruise ship captured the event on camera. The Cuban escapees tried to make it to American land. Cruise passenger Nestor Guzman, himself an immigrant, explained that being rescued doesn’t mean they were freed, because the Cuban refugees never made it to American soil and were found at sea, they were returned to Cuba. “It was good that they didn’t perish in the middle of the ocean.” Guzman said “What is going to happen now that they go back to Cuba? All the dream lost . . . To me especially, being from Latin America it was very emotional because I see the desire to go to the U.S. to be free after all these years, I’m sure all their partners were thinking about their children, we want the kids to be in America.” This is the fifth time this year cruise ships “rescued” Cuban families trying to reach the United States. GREAT CUBAN EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE YOU SAY Cuba Libre (La MENTIROTA & HOMOPHOBE?
MERCO PRESS: Most Cuban trained doctors fail basic test to practice medicine in Chile- Wednesday, January 25th 2012
Almost 80% of Chilean doctors with overseas degrees failed in 2011 the mandatory National medical knowledge Test, Eunacom, demanded to practice medicine in the country or have work opportunities at the government national health scheme.
Of the 477 hopefuls with foreign degrees that took the Eunacom test 376 failed. Most of them did their medical training in Cuba. The average point for these doctors was 38.84, well below the minimum floor demanded.
âThis group of doctors are not authorized to practice medicine in Chile and besides the test will now have to revalidate their degree at the University of Chileâ said Beltran Mean head of the Eunacom tests.
Regarding Chilean residents, the number of failed tests was down which means that out of 1.888 candidates only 38 didnât make it, which is an improvement from the 78 failed in 2010. The average points for this group were 74.05.
Of all Chilean medical schools represented in the tests, residents from the Universidad Mayor showed the best annual performance since the school jumped in the ranking from position seven to second. University of Chile climbed from position six to three, while the Catholic University once again held the first post.
At the opposite end those Chilean schools with the highest failure percentage belong to the Univsersidad del Mar, CatĂłlica de la SantĂsima ConcepciĂłn and from Antofagasta.

# 261 Anonimo,
At first I said to myself stupid posts like this one is not even worth commenting on. But then I said to myself if he is really this stupid, he definitely needs some help. Like I and others have stated before, there are modern motorized boats now in Cuba, and several of them, all accessible to anyone. They would make the trip from Havana to Key West in less than 2 hours. I doubt anyone would suffer dehydration or starve to death in 2 hours. So stop your lies, their are no makeshift rafts. The only ones that left are the ones that Mr. Castro had the decency to allow the dissidents, who didn`t approve of his way of ruling, to freely leave the island back then. How ironic there were only a few who left.
Stop with your lies. And your makeshift rafts, no one is fooled anymore by your lies. The truth will prevail.

Cuba’s Cash-for-Doctors Program -Thousands of its health-care missionaries flee mistreatment.- By MARIA C. WERLAU
For decades, Cuba has “exported” doctors, nurses and health technicians to earn diplomatic influence in poor countries and hard cash for its floundering economy. According to Cuba’s official media, an estimated 38,544 Cuban health professionals were serving abroad in 2008, 17,697 of them doctors. (Cuba reports having 70,000 doctors in all.)
These “missionaries of the revolution” are well-received in host countries from Algeria to South Africa to Venezuela. Yet those who hail Cuba’s generosity overlook the uglier aspects of Cuba’s health diplomacy.
The regime stands accused of violating various international agreements such as the Trafficking in Persons Protocol and ILO Convention on the Protection of Wages because of the way these health-care providers are treated. In February, for example, seven Cuban doctors who formerly served in Venezuela and later defected filed a lawsuit in Florida federal court against Cuba, Venezuela and the Venezuelan state oil company for holding them in conditions akin to “modern slavery.”
Cuba won’t release its agreements with host countries, but details have emerged in open sources, including in Cuba’s official media. These show that typically the host country pays Cuba hard currency for each health worker and provides accommodations, food and a monthly stipend generally between $150 and $350. Cuba covers airfare and logistical support, and it pays salaries to the health-care workers out of the funds it holds.
Cuba’s global health projects also receive support from the developed world. In 2005, at least $27 million was donated to Cuba’s Haiti mission, including from France and Japan. International goodwill also translates into direct aid. In 2008, Cuba received $127 million from OECD countries. These transfers explain the recent rise in Cuba’s export of services, to $8.6 billion in 2008 from $2.8 billion in 2003. Representing 75% of GDP, they generate far more income than any other industry.
Cuban doctors go abroad because at home they earn a scant $22-$25 a month. When they work in other countries, they typically get a small stipend in local currency while their families back home receive their usual salary plus a payment in hard currencyâfrom $50 to $325 per month.

Some reading I am sure will enlighten all the blind in here. Maybe it will enlighten them on Miss Sanchez`s goal backed by her backstabbers and hypocrites.
“Most Cubans support Castro. There’s no effective political opposition (…) the only foreseeable means to alienate internal support is by creating disillusionment and discouragement based on lack of satisfaction and economical difficulties.”
“America cannot tolerate any ideology other than individualistic capitalism. It spent billions of dollars in order to make communism/socialism bite the dust. It spent billions of dollars to crush Castro’s Cuba. Communism did bite the dust for all practical purposes. Cuba struggled much and survived heroically.”
Read and learn. Your times of lies and defamation are over. Why are people so reluctant to see the truth. Why is it so easy for the leeches and maggotts in here to aknowledge and accept everything that their government shoves into their brains without question? all good intellectuals…as Yoani should be with the masses, the 99% of cubans and create with them the NEW CUBA party because no one will stop the masses to have their voice as the 1 %…has, so its blog should be for such a patriotic, good movement…be a voice not as a candle, alone but of 99 %…and Damir and Cuba libre should help Yoani to do such a important thing for cubans, their country and not be as violent thugs and little dictators… fanatic, conservator… and more communistic that Castros and more believers that the pope…so if they work against their own country’s future and progress they should be arrested where ever they are inside or outside cuba as terrorist…terrorising the people of cuba, the 99% and even being against the 1 %…We should start looking to arrest now those brainwashed fanatics those who are working against cuba and cubans to build their paradise…so the long time setting sun can rise in 2012 in cuba again because even the name cubana means the centre of americas you Cuban dummies…who are destroying cuba with your flat stupid brainwashed brains living in the dark and who dont know the light and day and sun…born and grow up in the darkness…so get out and change cuba now or we the world citizens will come to occupy cuba and let her free to change, to be paradise again as never before in the new day that is starting…so get out you evil demons (damir, cuba libre…maybe anti cuba agents) and leave cuba’s body now…to be replaced with more tourist…than 2 million each year who should be 10-20 millions and maybe more coming from USA…So Damir and Cuba libre leave Cuba free now you bums and dums…you red little devils…You are the enemy of Cuba, in which we the tourist from the Cuba’s statistics bring $200-300 dollars each which means half billion dollars per year…and if there come as tourists 10-20 million Americans can be $ 5 billions per year..to feed not just the poor Cubans but the north and south america’s homeless too…Do you understand you rats who are eaten Cuba from inside…and also destroy the future of Cuba and the whole world?

Febrero 19th, 2012 at 00:14
John the One - I HAVE been to Cuba, many times over the last 15 years and as recently as last October. So do yourself a favour and disappear. I don’t need you tell me to have salsa lessons. I’ve had plenty of them.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 23:08
BBC film about Cuba here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related show some changes but
the leftis England looks to socialistic in this video even more than Cubans, but is good to see Cubans peasents producing more food, cleaning the bushes and making more money and profiting…the same for the small business in the cities…which look very old and must be demolished to build new small cities near the beach to engjoy as tourist paradise and also operate small, medium business and farm lands and profit all Cubans who must have a voice to as 99%, their New Cuba party…and get out as visitors and have even free internet…but also people in jail should be all free and start working with all 99% to rebuild their country which needs to rewritte its history…the true one, good and bad things that happen. Next month that pope is coming there these changes should start happening…they will free Cuba
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 22:06
Another capitalist imperialist recommending salsa lessons in Cuba.
Wow! Were they free or did you pay with your capitalist dollars?
What a bunch of greedy self-centered creatures. Is there a Marxist anywhere that cares about the poor and oppressed?

Only a loser, when beaten up and eating the dust off the floor, reaches out for personal comments and engages in a verbal conflict.
It is the last thing left out to the defeated.
Before they are taken out on the stretcher. Preferably lifeless… The shame of being beaten like a girl is always too much for primitives who think theya re some kind of machos.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 20:23
Little Johnny, I WAS in Cuba. Some years ago. Do yourself a favour and stop hating Cuba so much. Go there and enjoy the reality. You WILL be amazed. I recommend the harbor of Santiago for some serious fun and salsa lessons, although the parks in Havana are really beautiful too.
And do not worry, you will hardly see police on the streets. The ever-present 24/7 control just doesn’t exist there. It IS just a myth and a propaganda. Young Yoani IS lying about it. She knows that. You should too.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 20:19
Damir, it’s getting late. Why aren’t you in bed, dreaming of the life you will never have.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 20:17
Look at the posts, and their frequency, of the copy and pste genius humblebee.
When there are no articles to steal from the net, his posts hardly cover one or two lines. There’s NOTHING in them and the all end with his/her smartes comment yet: je, je, je…
Mind-blowing!!!!
So much so that her mind is already long gone.
Hence only the capacity to copy and paste. No capacity to write anything whatsoever of value.
To be truthful, neither the rest of the little helpers brigade is capable of actually saying something, ANYTHING, of value.

Hi John The One, I can’t look away. It is soo much fun to kick the cwap out of these losers, I’m addicted.
Every time I drag some lie out of their own posts, the whole paradise breaks apart and the cries and screaming starts like there’s no tomorrow.

How rediculous is that?

Damir, do not listen to these idiots. They do not understand the non-existence of democracy in their own countries, are brain-washed into hysterical hatred of socialism without knowing the first thing about it and are just a couple of parrots repeating the old used-up mantras of the Cold War era.

What’s up with the hiding, the team”yoani”?
No courage to actually participate in a debate you have started?
Cowards?
Or is it just that your own hypocrisy is catching up with you, and your little helpers are only making it worse for you to keep the posture while being pulverised by your own statements?
And those of your little helpers. There are some pearls there that you could REALLY do without.
Like the copy and paste genius ommissions about the water in Cuba, or that famous interview, where the Cuban pensioner who worked in usa 40 years RETURNED to CUBA and claimed that teh life in CUBA is
G O O D !!!!!
Come on, give me the opportunity to make you come out of that traitors’ and hypocrites closet. To demonstrate that teh obscure and unknown “ortega award” was just a capitalist machine propaganda “award”.
Here, I’ll even say it nicely: please let us have a debate. Please find the courage to ansver some little preguntitas that will hurt you fatally.
After all, the Cuban people deserve to know who is working on sticking the knife into their backs while professing the “love” for them!!!

Post 180 comments on excellent video posted by Cuba libre in 179, calling it “selective filming”.
ANd talking trahs about Cuba when the whole world knows that the nazists from the usa gulag are the most responsible for Cuba’s current economic difficulties, as confirmed by the team “yoani”, back in 2009?
THAT is not “selective”?
Talking stupidities about Cuba being at the bottom of the barrel, people walking in rags and being hungry is NOT selective?
Screaming and going beserk for no reason whatsoever while talking about Csocialist Cuba, is NOT selective?
The ignorant poster is being highly selective in chosing her own truth, yet it patronises others. What a hypocrite!!!!
Duh…
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 19:50
Are the Marxists still here? They said they were moving to Cuba.
At least the old school imperialists used to move to places like India and enjoy the fruits of empire.
Apparently Marxism is so awful no Marxist can stand living in a Marxist colony. Is it the Granma style toilet paper, or the food not fit for a pig?
I’d wager that Fidel uses imported capitalist toilet paper and eats imported capitalist food. Any takers?
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 19:35
Post 183, that was your own suburb there where you live, in “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”.
And you have no excuse for poverty in your “democracy”. Cuba is enduring 60 years of economic blockade by the usanian nazist gulag, as the team “yoani” have acknowledged and confirmed in 2009.
If they say Cuba is under destructive economic blockade, who can argue with them? You?
You are but an ignorant who knows nothing. Your posts shine through with your ignorance like a thousand suns in a tunnel.
Darn, I’m being unfairly poetic…

Cuba Libre, post 167 is a great kick in the empty sacks where the balls should be.
Funny is how it still hurt the losers, no?

More examples of absolute ignorance, hysterical bitternes and a hatred by the team “yoani’s” little helper who writes under various nicks pretending to be the “masses”, the posts 218, 219, 220 - among many others, of course.
It is also cristal clear that a supposed “Canadian” has no idea about the war in Jugoslavia, citing wrongly what the “intentions” of Canadian peacekeepers in bosnia was. The poster is definitely either NOT Canadian, or is one with far right shortsightedness problem.
Canadian troups were actually taking sympathy with the Serbs because despite the relentless “free democracy” “western” nazist propaganda, it was the muslims and Croats who started slaughtering Serbs, in a move reminiscent to what happened during the WWII, when for no reason whatsoever, the Croats and muslim pro-Hitler, escadrons of death slaughtered every Serbian they could find.
The massive onslaught went on for nearly three years and Serbs never forgot the unprovoked massacres. Yet, in the last Jugoslav war (but not the last one by any means) it was again the muslims and Croats attacking the cities and villages first, cleaning them of Serbs, which then naturally responded in kind.
But the “free democracy” media, just as they did now with the supposed “arab spring”, lied about the real cause of events in order to achieve their own goals from the break-up of Jugoslavia.
Canadian peace rep in Kosovo now is AGAIN on the Serbian side because he can see on the ground who is killing who and ethnically cleaning the areas of Kosovo. No one is talking about the fact that if all the Serbian refugees returned to Kosovo, SERBS would STILL be majority of inhabitants, and that half of Kosovo albanians came from Albania between 158 and 1978, multiplying like rats and catching up fast with the numbers of autochtone Serbian population.
So, shut your ignorant trap, because you have no idea what you are talking about.
Not that that is any of your business either, but if you read my posts from two years ago you will discover where I am from and that will only confuse you more.
For me only the absolute truth and facts is the only thing I am interested in.
Unlike you idiots. You are foreigners who can only boollshift about things you have no knowledge whatsoever, and destroy lives of people who did nothing to you to warrant your meddling in their lives, countries and destinies.
You are disgusting warmongering i***ts who deserve to be shot on sight.
Pity there’s not a simple solution, something like a pest termination to differentiate and isolate all the “know-all” cr**ns of the capitalist persuasion and exterminate them without us normal people getting dirty in the process.
Cr___ns with no brains and a lot of ideological delusions and halucinations. I am an atheist, but I sincerely hope your “god” delusion exists. To throw you all in the hell and burn you for eternity for all the evil that you have done to the world with your boollshift “free democracy and speech”, and “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”.
Who knows, maybe, when you idiots squeeze Iran enough to explode, they will drop a few nukes on you and wipe you all out of existence!!!
Now, THAT would be something to celebrate with that pop-corn and a glass of fine champagne.
And according to Gerard Clemente, a famous usanian economic forecaster that had more accurate predictions than Nostradamus, THAT is exactly what is going to happen, so soon there might be a flood of rafts from Florida rushing down south.
But sharks will take care of you before you reach the shores of sudden paradise, C U B A.

I think that the time has come for 15 of the Cubans to be friends with 99% of Cubans and let them have a NEW CUBA party…I dont understand how can an old party of some group of men, minority be against the majority, other Cuban people, the masses…No..no that cant happen so majority, people, the 99% must chose now also their own big party…and not just some of them…because all Cubans should be equal not some can create a party and the others no…and I am not saying to remove or change the old party’s government or regime but create one also for the majority, the 99%,the masses..and not just have only for 1 % as now…as it is now happening everywhere in the world which looks like a big dirty getho…because it is run by the few, the 1 % against 99%. Cuba should be different because it can be easy a paradise
I cant spend anymore time with you guys because I am busy with EU where the northern barbarians, the mountain’s peasants are occupying the south Europe, and destroying the God’s Garden of Eve,the Mediterranean paradise because now the stupid northeners are all socialists…and they want to destroy the south europe, the same as they did with their stupid barbarism; nazism and communism…but this time because of their stupid burocrats, technocrats and lazy albino people of the north where they eat only potatoes and cut trees, nations with their axes…as they did for 10,000 years in the cold frozen dark evil north…but in the hot sunny countries like Cuba people should be like the Mediterraneans…good and build their destroyed paradise again… but first they have to gather and create their people’s party now…and the whole world needs a NEW WORLD Party…a new world government because the old one does not exist…Cuba libre… to find out what the Cubans think and want now is better to let the borders free and the internet for free and not close them as North America is trying and planning to do.Cuba should be free now as you write;… Cuba libre…I dont think that is true that over 31,000 Cuban people were killed…let ask Cuba libre; who killed them if is true? Here is a war now also, but if that is true than pope cant visit there…but maybe is a fake statistic
Now a call for many of the people who comment here with big hate like some paid mercenaries and talk as enemoes and of course who are brainwashed or maybe are paid for a plate or rice or junk food;
stop now the fight because you will lose not just the food that you are fighting for but your heads too…when will rise the world 99% to eat all who work for the dum 1 %…I cant believe how stupid is this planet, thank God i am not from this planet where is no brain at all

if the pope retire is better for him to live in Cuba, because in Italy,Greece and all Mediterranean countries now that they are to hungry and angry may start a ww3 there and it will be to danger to live…so the red cardinals may stay all in Cuba..ask for Cuban’s citizenship…emigrating there and the same should do many Americans…200 millions of them now homeless…for that I was saying all the time that Cuba should open the borders so the North American hungry homeless people 300 millions of them should move to Cuba’s paradise
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 18:32
Are the pope, and all the red cardinals planning to offer to Castro the pope’s position or what…and if that is the idea than Vatican will be relocated in Cuba’s beach and the tourism will go up 700%…and all Cubans will be millioners…
but if Castro becomes pope where all you anti Castro guys will go..? for sure in the labor camps or in the famous camp in Cuba’s USA part…what is that called?…Humberto will be sent there first by the Americans… because he lives in California
Anyway…by next month Cuba may become the most important country if Castro becomes a pope…after the present one retires…and I will move to Cuba,in the New Vatican… pray all day in the beach…in Cuba’s paradise
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 18:02
INTERESTING NEWS! THE POPE WANTS TO SEE FIDEL! NOW I PERSONALLY THINK FIDEL IS SENILE, COMATOSE OR DEAD (my guess the latter)! THIS WILL PUT THE CASTROFASCIST GOVERNMENT IN A BIND SINCE THEY CANNOT EASILY SHOW OLD OR DOCTORED PICTURES OR VIDEOS OF THIS POPE MEETING FIDEL CASTRO!
REUTERS: Pope wants to see Fidel Castro on Cuba trip: source- by Philip Pullella;
VATICAN CITY- Pope Benedict wants to see Fidel Castro on his trip to Cuba next month but the meeting will depend on the health of the communist country’s revolutionary leader, a senior Vatican official told Reuters on Saturday.
The official, speaking of the sidelines of a ceremony after the pope elevated new cardinals, said the status of the meeting was still pending.
“It will depend on his health,” the prelate said.
At present, the pope is only scheduled to meet Fidel Castro’s younger brother, President Raul Castro, 80, whose formal title is president of the Council of State and president of the Council of Ministers.
Raul Castro is due to welcome the pope at Santiago de Cuba on March 26, hold private talks with him in Havana on March 27, and see the pontiff off when he leaves Havana for Rome on March 28.
There is no mention of Fidel Castro on the official program.
Fidel Castro, 85, ruled Cuba for 49 years before his brother succeeded him in 2008.
The elder Castro now seldom appears in public, but occasionally meets in private with visiting foreign leaders and writes columns about international affairs.
One purpose of the papal visit is to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of Cuba’s most famous religious icon, the statue of the Virgin of Charity.
Last month a replica of the statue completed a 16-month pilgrimage around the island that was the first such religious display since the 1950s.
It was another signal of improved relations between the government and the Catholic Church, which were at odds for many years following the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro.
Relations began to warm in the 1990s, a process that was aided by a 1998 visit by Pope John Paul II, and intensified in 2010 when the Church brokered a deal with Castro to release political prisoners.
The late John Paul met Fidel Castro twice, once at the Vatican and then during his 1998 trip to Cuba
Benedict’s visit to Cuba is part of a March 23-28 trip that will take him first to Mexico.

stop you guys…dont fight anymore for nothing because now the elites, both in so called capitalist and communist country have become so much friends with each other than they all decided to give their posts to new generation of community of the gays…who are again used now as in the ww2 time…from both the aleats…the old friends or lovers. So the lovers separated for a while and hated each other…but they are united again now…
For sure new gays soon will run their countries so the hate is replaced with fresh love…new gays will change the country and the people and make all gays…from the top to the bottom, left and right….and you can see that happening now in Canada,Usa and Cuba so it is a big trio love story now taking place…and if was not about love why should the pope show now…but because is a big love on top…so should be in the bottom…why not..?
Pope should bless their new big love so the two old friends dont separate anymore…(Cuba-Usa,east-west,capitalism-communism)
Finally I can say that all you guys here will be friends, very close friends soon or later, pope will bless all of you next month…and your hate will turn to big love…they are all similar 100% in everything…but the problem for the will be the 99% of the world who may go to world revolution against the 1 % of elites everywhere…or maybe there will be a world martial law or a world war to fight the 99%

Hank, nice family photo album of those sociopathic brothers. It’s worth noting that Cuba announced 3 days official mourning when North Korean dictator Kim Il Jong died. And that Cuba’s best friends and allies around the world include such human rights luminaries as Hugo Chavez, Ahmadinejad, Moamar Gadaffi and Bashir al-Assad of Syria. What a sweet bunch of killers all of them.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 15:14
Cuba Liar,
One last thing about Yugoslavia. It’s a shame you know so little about history, and what you do know is wrong. The Canadian Forces observer mission you mentioned was under the UN. We wanted stronger ROE, but the Russians (your Communist friends) hamstrung the UN and refused to allow the UN troops to use force. The Russians did this to help protect their fiends the Serbs while they committed genocide against the Bosnians. It was only when the NATO mission, lead by the US which had stinger ROE entered the conflict and, using American airpower, stopped the Serbian slaughter of the Bosnians.
Which side were you cheering in the Bosnian wars? The Serbians? Good pick.
Now, as for the literacy rates and health care in Cuba. You are quite correct, the government does provide these to all people. The education comes with a large does of propaganda. University graduates with degrees in engineering are working as cab drivers and waiters, because there are no jobs for them. The health care is not as good as they boast either. People have to bring fresh bandages to hospital because the hospitals have no supplies.
For these lousy services, the Cuban people merely have to endure a Communist dictatorship with no political freedom, no free speech, no free press, no freedom of labour, no economic freedom and no freedom of travel. Naturally, the upper echelons of the ruling party live much better than the average Cuban. They even get a better class of healthcare.
And for the privilege of enjoying these limited government services, the people must endure tens of thousands of political executions, torture, imprisonment, dispossession, and daily harassment from the police. But as you already said, drowning a few dozen children, who were all traitors to the cause as you said, are worth it.
Keep it up, Cuba Liar. You wouldn’t know the truth if it hit you over the head.

EXCELLENT ANALYSIS OF BRAZIL’S PRESIDENT Dilma Rousseff TRIP TO CUBA! AND WITH WIT AND SARCASM AS I LIKE THEM! AND Cuba Libre (La MENTIROTA & HOMOPHOBE, BABY!! IM NOT POSTING FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT! IS FOR THE THOUSANDS WHO READ THIS BLOG, SPECIALLY THE NEW ARRIVALS! JE JE JE! I GOT LOTS OF OTHER “AMMUNITION” UNDER MY BELT! OR SKIRT IF IM IN DRAG! JE JE JE!
HUFFINGTON POST: And the Winner Is….. - Anthony DePalma
They had convinced themselves that what they would see during the president’s three days in Havana was a dramatic confrontation in which the legendary Brazilian activist defiantly challenged the creaking old Cuban regime to respect the voices of opposition. In their minds they had conjured up a script in which the visa that Brazil gave to Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez would prod the aging Castro brothers to respond in kind and at long last allow Sanchez to travel abroad. They pictured a Hollywood moment in which Dilma, on Cuban soil for the first time as president, met with Sanchez and other dissidents, and spoke out forcefully for their right to express their political views and to voice their demands for change.
That would have been a five star movie, but the actors were not following that script. Dilma did not meet with Sanchez or any other dissidents. She dared not even pronounce Sanchez’s name, referring to her only as “la bloguera,” and saying that after Brazil approved her visa, it was up to the Cuban government to determine whether to allow her to leave. So much for the heart-stirring moment of democratic solidarity that so many hoped to see.
As so often is the case with Cuba, those who had anticipated such a scene were projecting what they wanted to see, not what was history told them was likely to take place. The proper script for this trip would have been the one that had Dilma campaigning, not for her office in Brazil, which is secure, but for leader of Latin America. Her audience was certainly not Cuba, but rather her homeland and, just as important, the rest of Latin America where siding with Castro and standing up to the United States is a guaranteed way of making points. Look, even Canadian leaders, as close as they are to the U.S., understand that one sure way to pick up support is to stand up to Washington.
And that is what Dilma did. Oh, she spoke about prisons and human rights, which she had stated will be a hallmark of her administration, but not the way people had imagined. “We are going to start by talking about human rights in the United States, with respect to a base here (in Cuba) called Guantanamo,” she told reporters who were following her. Following the same script as her predecessor and other Latin leaders, she condemned the U.S. embargo and ignored completely the harshness of the Castro regime, including the death, just last month, of Wilman Villar Mendoza, who dissidents said had been on hunger strike in prison. The Cuban government called him a common criminal.
The president made her pilgrimage to see the frail 85-year-old Fidel, a visit she said she made with pride, and she spent considerable time with RaĂșl, 80, talking among other things about the rising important of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which held its first summit in December. Unlike the Organization of American States, CELAC includes Cuba, but excludes the United States and Canada, leaving plenty of room for Brazil to take a leadership role.

World Audit brings together statistics and reports from highly respected agencies, each with their own developed specialities. Freedom House, Transparency International, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, The International Commission of Jurists are THE names where political rights, civil liberties, press freedom, perceptions of corruption, human rights, and the rule of law, are concerned. From their admirable work we present and update the World Democracy Audit. Our reports monitor and rank every one of the 149 nation states with populations in excess of 1 million - thus 99% of the world’s population. In addition, for purposes of comparison, we include the Table produced by the World Forum of Electoral Democracies. Finally, we have 210 country pages which include World Audit statistics and links to democracy and human rights country reports, and now The Index of Economic Freedom as well, a different kind of liberty to the other reported here.
FYI and CLARIFICATION! “LOWER RANKINGS” means LOWER NUMBERS !!
As a result, Iraq * (123) and Afghanistan (141) are quite simply wrecked.
Cuba (132); Laos (142); Vietnam (128) doggedly remain âcommunistâ whatever that now means, with the scores to prove it. Power is retained in very few hands, personal liberties are severely restricted â they are classic police states - their rankings reflect the realities.
North Korea is the only country in the world we have found impossible to rank, because access is denied into their country, but freedom of the press is observable from a distance, and is marked at 150, at the bottom of all the worldâs countries. Despite the âcompetitionâ down there at the foot of the table, we believe it to be the most undemocratic nation state in the world. (News of dramatic corruption often involving banks in Macao, forging of dollar bills etc; surfaces from time to time - our sister publication New Nations gives an analytical report on North Korea monthly).
Latin America used to be a by-word for violent and corrupt government often with military dictators. In the 21st C that has certainly changed.
Twenty two nations are listed, the first five are either fully democratic or close. The giant Brazil (51) is in Division III but heading in the right direction. Only Cuba, Venezuela and Haiti are near the bottom of the table.
The 20th World Audit report of the millennium, this survey is concerned with the condition of democracy as it relates to 150 nation states â all those with a population of more than a million.
We define democracy via the criteria of Human Rights; Political Rights; Free Speech; and the Absence of Corruption.
We have been publishing this survey since 1997. Numbers are adjusted during each year when new data become available. This report is able to compare the results of 2001 over ten years with those of 2011.
Methodology: The World Democracy league tables side notes, explain our sources and how we build the statistics into tables of rank.
The primary objective of this website is to educate and inform. The world-wide focus is on democracy, human rights, press freedom, corruption and the rule of law. World Audit is aimed at anyone with an interest in these topics, from professional human rights journalists to first-time users of the world wide web.
The table below shows the most recent World Democracy Audit scores and rankings achieved by this country. Lower rankings (LOWER NUMBERS) are preferable.
CUBA’S NUMBERS BELOW, BUT I MUST DISAGREE WITH THE CORRUPTION NUMBER, SHOULD BE MUCH HIGHER!
World Democracy Audit overall ranking TOPIC RANGE: 1-150 RANKING SCORE= 132
Political Rights TOPIC RANGE: 1-7 RANKING SCORE= 7

FREEDOM HOUSE REPORT: Freedom in the World 2012
Glimmers of Hope for the Most Repressed: Burma, which has ranked alongside North Korea as one of the worldâs most closed societies, experienced what many hope will become a major political opening. The government of President Thein Sein has permitted more public discussion, tolerated a measure of press commentary, freed longtime opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and cleared the path for her partyâs participation in elections. Another country that endured decades of brutal misrule, Libya, now has the potential for significant gains thanks to the overthrow of al-Qadhafi. Cuba, also one of the worldâs most repressive countries, experienced a small improvement linked to the limited reduction of economic restrictions by the government of RaĂșl Castro. Unlike in Burma, however, Cuba underwent no political liberalization.
An additional 8 countries and territories received scores that were slightly above those of the worst-ranked countries, with ratings of 6,7 or 7,6 for political rights and civil liberties: Belarus, Burma, Chad, China, Cuba, Laos, Libya, and South Ossetia.
FREEDOM STATUS : Cuba Not Free
Political Rights score = 7 ( 1 being best & 10 worst)
Civil Liberty Score = 6 ( 1 being best & 10 worst)

And for the skeptics who don`t believe in writings from the Granma, would you believe in Wikipedia, the internet library based on facts and historical events?
“Cuba has a 99.8% literacy rate,[3][13] an infant death rate lower than some developed countries,[14] and an average life expectancy of 77.64.[3] In 2006, Cuba was the only nation in the world which met the WWF’s definition of sustainable development; having an ecological footprint of less than 1.8 hectares per capita and a Human Development Index of over 0.8 for 2007.[15″

Wow what breaking news you bring us.
“The state maintains a total monopoly on television, radio, the press, internet service providers, and other electronic means of communication.9 According to official figures, there are currently 723 publications (406 print and 317 digital), 88 radio stations, four national TV channels (two devoted to educational programming), 16 regional TV stations and an international TV channel. All are financed and controlled by the government.10 Three newspapers provide national coverage: Granma, which is the organ of the Cuban Communist Party, Juventud Rebelde and Trabajadores.”
Man that is breaking news, lol. The state also runs and pays for everything else in Cuba, duh.

El Ciber Rata,
If you would have taken the time to read previous posts, you would have seen I was simply replying to insinuations made by your brown-nosed associates who bow to your feet. But of course as soon as I prove their lies wrong, they say its not rellevant to Cuba. So why did they bring the subject up.
And to further prove your ignorance I will quote you, ” The literacy rate, 76%, was the fourth highest in Latin America. Cuba ranked 11th in the world in the number of doctors per capita.”The fact is the literacy rate now is near 100% and the number of doctors per capita they now rank number 1 and not 11th. Boy Mr. Castro has really failed the Cubans don`t you agree.
The truth will be heard.

YOUTUBE: Eviction of Isael Lara Torres from his home in the neighborhood in El Cobre due to the papal visit. Hundreds of Cuban citizens are being evicted from their homes due to Pope’s Benedeicto XVI visit, because the communist regime wants to hide the extreme poverty under much of the Cuban population lives. What this government is doing is an abuse and a violation of human rights, leaving them homeless because they need for these sub-human conditions and home to disappear. It is critical that the Pope knows this, because when he visits the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity what he will see beyond the adjacent area of the temple is the reality well documented of the wickedness of their hosts, the brothers Fidel and Raul Castro.

Help, you are so wrong: The Marxists found a way to make toilet paper long time ago. They also decided that their new type of toilet paper must be folded and not rolled. They also have a new name for it for different countries. In Cuba it’s called Granma, in the USSR it was called Pravda and so on
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 12:54
Marxists believe they should run the world and everyone else should obey their orders.
This recipe for success led to Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Fidel, who couldn’t even feed his people running an agricultural paradise.
After half a century in power, the Marxists are still trying to figure out how to produce toilet paper.

PBS AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: FIDEL CASTRO- Pre-Castro Cuba- Cuba’s capital, Havana, was a glittering and dynamic city. In the early part of the century the country’s economy, fueled by the sale of sugar to the United States, had grown dynamically. Cuba ranked fifth in the hemisphere in per capita income, third in life expectancy, second in per capita ownership of automobiles and telephones, first in the number of television sets per inhabitant. The literacy rate, 76%, was the fourth highest in Latin America. Cuba ranked 11th in the world in the number of doctors per capita. Many private clinics and hospitals provided services for the poor. Cuba’s income distribution compared favorably with that of other Latin American societies. A thriving middle class held the promise of prosperity and social mobility.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: RESTRICTIONS ON FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IN CUBA- Amnesty International Publications 2010
STATE MONOPOLY OF THE MEDIA
The media is a key arena in which the right to freedom of expression is exercised. It plays a critical role in any society, for example raising awareness of human rights and exposing human rights violations. The media has the potential to help shape public opinion and to monitor and assess the performance of those holding public office at all levels; it is an important tool for scrutinizing government practices in all societies no matter their political ideology. The absence of an independent media is a serious obstacle to the enjoyment of freedom of expression and the adequate review of corrupt and abusive official practices. Restrictions on the Cuban media are stringent and pervasive and clearly stop those in the country from enjoying their right to freedom of opinion and expression, including freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.8 The state maintains a total monopoly on television, radio, the press, internet service providers, and other electronic means of communication.9 According to official figures, there are currently 723 publications (406 print and 317 digital), 88 radio stations, four national TV channels (two devoted to educational programming), 16 regional TV stations and an international TV channel. So, the reason the dictator of Cuba won’t hold an open, free election is that it costs too much? Really? That’s a new one.
The reason there are no elections in Cuba and no parties other than the communist party in Cuba is that the dictatorship is in absolute fear of losing its grip on power. The dictatorship is illegitimate and it knows it. They murder people to hold on to that power. Thatâs why there is no freedom of speech, no freedom of assembly and no freedom to travel. You just donât get it, Cuba Liar. You’ve been asked many times: When are you moving there? Do you have the courage of your convictions to go there to live? Tear up that Canadian passport and leave the “rats and maggots” as you refer to them and go to live amongst the happy Cubans where you can sing and dance in the streets, drink rum and avail yourself of free healtcare, cradle to grave.

What these Marxist imbeciles don’t understand is that the US government is constantly changing, the government of Obama is not the government of Nixon and is not the government of Truman. Whatever happened in the past, it is present reality that matters.
So the facts of the matter are: the present US government never wants to use nuclear weapons or wage any type of war against anyone. In today’s world, it is the USA that is constantly being attacked, by the Iranian dictator among others, and the US is extremely reluctant to respond.
For the size of its army, the US is the most peaceful nation on earth, by far. If the CIA wanted to overthrow the Cuban government, all they had to do at any time since 1990 is supply a few Cuban guerrillas with some weapons and the whole country would have welcomed them as liberators.
That is the stuff they used to do in the 1950s and the Marxist imbeciles forget that Fidel Castro got his weapons and funding from the USA and that Eisenhower placed an arms embargo against Batista. But the Marxist imbeciles are never against US foreign intervention when it places a Marxist in power.

Oh yeah the U.N. forces were present in Bosnia-Herzegovina, I know my brother in law served in the Canadian army there for the United Nations. You know what their mission was?? Of course you don`t. Their mission was to watch, observe, and keep notice of the attrocities going on there and not to intervene in any way. He told me his job was to go into a dugout all night and observe and take note of what went on. In his notes he would note that at 2 A.M. the Serbs fired 5 rounds of AK 47`s. Then he would note that the Kosovo freedom fighters would retaliate at 3 A.M. with 2 morter shots. That was their role, observe and take note. They simply stood by, watched, and allowed all the murdering,
The truth will be heard.

But of course in the “land of the free”, there are no dissidents. They all praise their government. They all approve of the “crimes against humanity” they have done in defenseless countries. That is why they live in their la di da fairy tale world. That is why their are no anti-government rallies there. That is why no American president has ever been killed. That is why there has never been an attempt against any president or congressman (woman). That is why there has never been any attacks on government offices or buildings. People in here often ask for open elections in Cuba. Why would anyone want to change a government that has on more than one occasion proved itself for the benefit of its people. Does anyone know how many millions of dollars it costs the American and Canadian people every 4 years to hold elections? I don`t know the exact amount so I will abstain from advancing any number but it must be several millions.
Did you know that in the Canadian Senate their sits 105 senators. The base annual salary of each senator, as of 2010, is $132,300; members may receive additional salaries in right of other offices they hold. In the House of Commons there are 308 seats. The basic sessional allowance is $157,000 per year. After a member of Parliament has served his term he is entitled to $248,000 yearly in pension pay. On the other hand if a Canadian senator should decide to retire at the ripe age of 54 he would be entitled to $202,900 yearly. And this is only on the Federal scale. Multiply that by 10 for each province in Canada.
There are 435 members in the US Congress. Each with an annual allowance of $174,000 plus the fringe benefits. All former presidents of the great USA are allowed $191,300 pension yearly. And you want to know how much all of Congress costs the USA in pension plans based on 2002 modifications? Vice President - $192,600; Speaker of the House - $192,600; Majority & Minority Leaders of the Senate & House - $166,700; Senators & Representatives - $150,000; Cabinet members (Executive Schedule, Level 1) - $166,700.
So tell me, how much money has Mr. Castro and his Revolutionary government saved the Cuban people.

A “tailor made” suit can be an absolute thing of beauty, an expression of the skills of a master craftsman, who has worked long and hard to develop his amazing talent.
This is somehow turned into something unsavory in the twisted view of an armchair marxist. Heaven forbid anyone should desire a tailor made suit. Everyone has to be equally poorly dressed. Viva la revolucion.

anton, if you want t know how many people have been killed in all the wars, genocides & oppressions of history, go check Professor Rummel’s on Democide: http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/welcome.html
In the 20th Century, Communism has been by far the greatest killer of all humanity.
Damir -thank you for the perfect comment. After I posted links to photos of Cuban rafts, and links to seems of statistics and record of the thousands of people murdered by the Castro regime, you repeated the lies about Cubans have lots of pleasure boats to sale around in. Were those 12 children who drowned when the Cuban Navy rammed the tugboat all drug dealers? This is exactly how the regime slanders their innocent victims. It is informative to see how you use the very same insults.
Cuba Liar, were these children “traitors” who deserved to be eliminated? Still you justify murder and call Castro’s Cuba “peaceful”. Go back to that link I provided for you. Look into the eyes of that small child and tell her she deserved to die because she was a “traitor to the cause”. What cause justifies drowning children?
You prove why Communism must be destroyed were ever it exists, why Communists can never be entrusted with power. You are a perfect specimens of that type of Communist sociopath who can say “a million deaths are a statistic”. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Mengistu, Pol Pot, Kim & Castro all murdered to secure their power and enslave millions. They ruled through fear and lies. The same lies you post here.
So please, keep it up. With every post you prove Yoani correct.

Now for those of you who took the time to view it. Where did you see the oppression that Team Yoani boast so much? Where did you see the famine and starvation that they so deeply despise? Where did you see any sadness in the eyes of the children, elderly, and every other person in the video?
Of course we didn`t see people driving around in 2013 cars. Of course we didn`t see people dressed in taylor made suits. That is not the Cuban way of life. But we did see all the people in very good health. I didn`t see all the people starving to death as Team Yoani tell us. I did see perfectly happy children playing in the streets. I did see smiling people singing and dancing. I did see happy people going along their everyday habits with smiles on their faces.

# 163 great post Damir.
Another eye opener that I hope some skeptics in here will take the time to read and learn.
Imagine that, 50 years gone by and the great USA still haven`t digested their defeat at the Bay of pigs. A country well armed as they are were chased away with sticks and stones by the Cubans. What a scorn it was for them and the reason for their blockade. What they didn`t lear is that when you attack someone without reason, the attacked will fight back with everything they have to protect something they believe in. Cubans fought back and were willing to die to be able to preserve their newly aquired freedom from the imperialist monster.
Now the leeches and maggotts even dare to deny the blockade. They say there never has been a blockade, yet they say they have softened up on it and opened up a little. The fact is they opened up only for trade against things the USA needs from Cuba and only those things. They boast the billions of dollars of trade with Cuba when everyone knows they just give them the crumbs that fall from their table. Hypocrisy to its apogy.
But the great USA did learn something from the Bay of Pigs invasion. Now when they attck a defenseless country, first they send in all their artillery and tomahawk missiles. First they send in their airforce to bombard and destroy its infrastructures. And when they are ready to be picked like ripe apples, they send in their GI`s to rape and torture whatever is left of the civilian population.

Cubalibre did tell the truth…that there is war…and killing are done from those who fight in the war…which seems has not finished but continues…but I am surprised why the pope comes there to such a hot war zone or field where people still are killed in violent war with so much hate between the enemies who use to be friends in the past…fighting both Spain…?

Damir…may be right when he writes, thinks, talks about the world evils from the top to the bottom; the corruption, money, drogs, prostitution, crime, criminels…but he shoud writte also about the people…the victims…in every nation, now as a getho country…inclueding the victims in Cuba…all the crimes done there from all kind of criminals..because there are many kinds, many crimes done in every bloodthirsty country…
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 08:55
# 146 Hank,
Of course as usual you try to turn the conversation away from the subject at hand. How can you say that my post about all the people the the USA have killed since WWII is not rellevant. You are the one who stated that the Revolutionary government has blodd on their hands. My question was who has more blood on their hands the USA or Mr. Castro. We all know the answer so you say it has nothing to do with cuba.
The truth is its war. In every war you will have casualties. Who is to say who is right and who is wrong during a war. In every war the one who leads the war will state that the loss of a few is necessary sometimes for the good of the many. The elimination of a few traitors of the revolution seems to have served it purpose for Cuba is one of the most peaceful countries in the world today. Can the great USA say as much? Can it say that the world is a better place to live in today? No. The All it has achieved is to aggravate the situation more. And everywhere the USA went to war, nothing was ever solved, it just created more havoc and confusion and hatred against itself.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 08:50
I did no understand ..john…what and for whom he was posting…but now that… Damir …is back we should ask him again; can the masses,99% of Cubans create, have their own,New Cuba party as the 1% have one there?’(I did post many questions for him and I can answer to him…instead of Yoani’s team)
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 05:35
#163 - you must have esp if you know the status of posters here. For your information, I have excellent prospects in life, I have an EXTREMELY good and worthwhile job, I have as much do with Cuba as you do and I think you’re very sick. Go back under a rock and rot. You’re not worth the space you take up on the planet. You’re a nasty little creep. Sod off.

That was 6 T R I L L I O N S in the post below, of false usanian bonds, ready for the financial markets.
Imagine the sunami of bancrupcies had that money come out into the mainstream.
All conservative wrong whingers, capitalists.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 04:09
Post 137, Cuba Libre, is absolutely correct. I was there last September, as I was there in September the year before that, and almost every years in the last decade, and I saw Cubans who have nothing to do with the government, some of them would fit among the pioneers of the team “yoani’s” support brigade, driving some nice boats.
Probably bought with the money from drugs, arms and prostitution rings. After all, a criminalistic research cnducted in EU in late 1990’s has determined that political orientation of just about 99.99% of criminals is conservative and capitalist. A quick digression, just fresh off the news, Italian police have arrsted a number of suspects after discovering false usanian bonds worth ^ T R I L L I O N of useless usanian dollars.
So, the Cubans driving those flashy boats and cars I saw on the streets of Cuba, and there are many nowadays, are most likely property of local criminals.
Just like the team “yoani’s” pin-up granny.
And this statement is not based on any irrational “hatred” as some ignorant derranged losers have suggested in the past.
Rather, it is based on the fact that what the team “yoani” are doing is illegal and against the law.
If it is fine to bullshift about the “rule of law” in “free democracy”, why is it not okay to obey and observe the law in socialism? At least the part that is the same in EVERY country in the world: if you receive the money from a foreign government or individuals with the aim to undermine and overthrow the government, that is a treason.
In the usa the traitors like that are gassed or electrocuted. Along with hundreds of innocent people, by the way, but that only shows which country is the real nazist gulag.
It is still quite mind-numbing to see “so many” usanians here patronising a foreign country with which they have got NOTHING IN COMMON, and NOTHING TO DO WITH.
Yet these losers with no job, no prospect in life and no future to speak of, dare to complain when Damir, or anyone else tells them some hard cold fact about their own nazist gulag that keeps the world in constant war state and opressed 24/7.
Talk about the nazist dictator osama bin barrack and his (or any other usanian dictators’s) government and suddenly you are “full of hatred”.
What a hypocrisy.
Go die somewhere in peace and silence. Your breath pollutes the air. Yur own country is falling apart under the weight of its’ own failed delusional ideolgy called “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”.
Now, where was the team “yoani”, to engage in a real and open debate?
Still hiding.
It’s easy to pretend the righteous one until the karma catches up with you, isn’t it?
I am still waiting. The longer you hide, the more guilty you admit you are. And the list of your lies is already VERY long.

I love this sentence from Yoani’s essay:
Saved in a some drawer is that song he composed with his guts hanging out, that poem where he got totally naked, or that screaming mouth he once painted.
She captures the bitter regret the “good intellectual” feels at the loss of his soul in the bastardization of his art for the ideological diktats of the Party. Deep down he knows it’s all for a lie.

Febrero 18th, 2012 at 01:30
Pierre,
The US has a policy called “Wet Foot, Dry Foot”. Any Cubans who set foot on American soil are automatically granted permission to stay. If they are intercepted while at sea, they are taken to the US base at Guantanamo Bay. There they stay at a camp (not the same prison the terrorists are kept in, of course) while their case is heard. From there they are either sent back to Cuba or allowed into the US.
Yet still they do come on rafts to America.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 01:24
Cuba Liar… Hiroshima & Nagasaki brought a sudden end to WWII. Prior to that, Japan had been murdering some 500,000 civilians in China, Korea & the Philippines for each of the previous 6 months. Did you want them to keep on going? Japan started that war too, or did you forget Pearl Harbor? Did you also forget the Canadians the Japanese killed in Hong Kong? The North Vietnamese killed far more Vietnamese than the Americans did. The terrorists in Iraq murdered 10 times as many Iraqis by intention than the Americans did by accident. And the war in Afghanistan was all started by your friends the Russians, where they killed 60,000 Afghan fighters and some 600,000 to 2 million civilians.
R.J. Rummel, Professor Emeritus of Political Science, University of Hawaii, list the “median” number of 73,000 as victims of the “democide” of the Castro regime on his site.
“The greatest source of post-war democide was communism (see the communist death toll). During and after the war communists seized power, or came to power with the help of Soviet military might, as in Eastern Europe. In addition to the USSR, Mongolia, Eastern European regimes, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia, communist regimes eventually also included China, North Korea, North Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Cuba, Grenada, Afghanistan, Angola, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, and South Yemen, or 26 regimes in all. These communist governments and the communist guerrillas they supported in other countries account for about 66,000,000 of the 76,000,000 murdered since the war, or about 87 percent. Clearly, of all regimes, communist ones have been by far the greatest killer. During these years it has been mostly death by Marxism than more generally by government.”
Add to that the hundreds of thousands of Africans killed by Castro’s armies sent to Congo, Angola, Mozambique, Ethiopia & Mauritania.
Were these few 76 million “traitors to the cause” as you put it? Thus you justify genocide.

Febrero 18th, 2012 at 01:11
Cuba Libre,
As usual, you miss the point entirely, this blog isnât about the US, WWII, Vietnam, or the Middle East. Go somewhere else to have that fight. This blog is about Cuba. Your non-denial of the crimes committed by f. castro, r. castro and che speaks volumes. The truth is, you like murderers; and you are a bigot. You even disgustingly justify these criminals by saying the âRevolution has eliminated a few traitors to its cause.â You admit that your heroes are are murderers.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 00:57
Woah Hank, I see you get a little upset when I prove you wrong huh, Good, You might as well get used to it cause I`m gonna keep on stating the truth in here, and I`m gonna prove you wrong everytime you try to pass you lies without being noticed.
By the way you never answered my question, who has more blood on their hands, The Revolutionary government of Cuba since the revolution, or the government of the great U.S.A. since the same timeline???
ho is the liar, and who is the Village Idiot?? You sure have a way of showing its you everytime you open your mouth in here. I suggest you open your mouth to the “ciber raton”, he will gladly fill it with something gladly, and then maybe you wouldn`t be speaking stupidities for a while anyways,
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 00:53
Cuba Liar, I did read your post. As usual, it’s full of bullshit.
Two million Cubans have fled the country since 1959. They still continue to flee. Some 60,000 Cubans have died attempting to cross the Florida straits. I have spoken to Cubans in Cuba who said they would escape on a raft if they could build one. Most Cuban’s are not allowed to rent boats by themselves. Only licensed fishermen are allowed to operate boats, or those deemed “ideologically sound”.
If Cubans are allowed to freely leave as you say they are, then why or how did the Cuban government deny permission to Yoani to travel to Brazil?
But you keep on posting your Castro propaganda. Nobody believes a word you write. Even you know your posts are bullshit. Every post you make re-inforces the truth in Yoani’s essays.

# 138 Griffin,
Had you taken the time to read post 137 I wouldn`t need to repeat myself. In Cuba nowadays they have ultra-modern catamarans and luxurious motorized boats. They are accessible to any Cuban who might be interested in going for a ride cause most of them are operated by Cubans. If anyone in their right mind wanted to leave Cuba, why would they try their luck with a make-shift raft instead of a modern motorized catamaran with a good sailor in charge?
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 00:40
Griffin, you are right Cuba Libre has NO conception about Cuban life. He can afford to go there 3 times a year and lie on a beach in front of a 4 star all inclusive hotel and go home again. He thinks that’s the Cuban way of life. He’s just a joke.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 00:36
Cuba Libre - will you stop asking us to believe what’s written in granma. And do not accuse me of being someone else. I laughed like a drain when you said you’d move to the US for a million dollars. What? And live among more rats, maggots and leeches with all that money? You are a liar, an imbecile and a hypocrite. And that goes for Damir as well. By the way, when are you moving to Cuba to live like a good marxist?

Who has more blood on their hands tell me. Is it Fidel Castro since the revolution more than 50 years ago, or is it the US that are trying to make the world its playground?? The US have killed more people in any given war (i.e. Vietnam, Irak, Afghanistan) than the Revolutionary government in Cuba has since the start of the revolution, How easily we forget huh. So don`t give me that crap about them having blood on their hands,
I`ll go one step further, The US killed more people in one single day than the revolutionary government killed since the beginning of the revolution, or did you already forget Hiroshima. Did you already forget Nagasaki?? And yet you cry out for injustice and denial of human rights cause the Revolution has eliminated a few traitors to its cause. The truth will be heard.

I wonder when your filth propaganda will stop “El Ciber Rata’. I told you again and again, in Cuba nowadays they have ultra-modern catamarans and luxurious motorized boats. They are accessible to any Cuban who might be interested in going for a ride cause most of them are operated by Cubans. If anyone in their right mind wanted to leave Cuba, why would they try their luck with a make-shift raft instead of a modern motorized catamaran with a good sailor in charge??? Their are no make-shift rafts, its all American backed slander propaganda to create havoc and confusion amongst Cubans.
The only boats you will find are the ones that are trying to smuggle drugs to the US.

Cuba Liar,
Did it occur to you the last two essays from Yoani made no sense to you because your conception of Cuba is totally out of touch with reality? If you understood anything about what life in Cuba is really like, you would agree Yoani’s essays are insightful and deeply moving.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 00:15
anton - It is illegal to form a new political party in Cuba. The police will arrest anybody who tries and throw them in jail. There is no freedom of speech in Cuba, no free press, no free association, no freedom of travel, no economic freedom and no free labour unions. It would be great if the Cuban people could do this, form a new party and build a new Cuba, but they will have to get rid of the regime first.
Febrero 18th, 2012 at 00:02
Cuba Libre,
No one takes you seriously because the only âreal and trueâ thing about you is that you are a bigot.
You donât respect people — you are a hate-filled homophope. All you know is intolerance.
You are a hypocrite — you justify the continued denial of the right to travel to Yoani because she writes a blog in which she expresses her opinions. At the same time, you enjoy your right to travel freely and express your opinions without fear of losing any rights. This is the height of hypocrisy.
You idolize people who you acknowledge to be murderers. Hereâs what you said: â[t]he last rafts that left [Cuba] were not long after the revolution when âEl Cheâ was cleansing Cuba of all the capitalist leeches and maggotts that were still on the island paradise, and believe me they had better try their luck on a makeshift raft than face the rath of âEl Commandante.â â The word âcleansing,â as we all know, is a euphemism for murder. You advocate for the murderers che, fidel and raul without shame. These men have blood on their hands; they are criminals by any standard of human decency. But you donât get that, do you.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 23:55
Griffin…that I am afraid that the members of the old communist party may be busy and because they live in nice places or the luxury resorts they are not much involved with the masses as they use to do when they came in power…and for that the masses should create a party or new organization to start working, thinking, changing Cuba now
Cuba Libre… I know that Cuba’s achivements and statistic may look good,as in the North America and EU…where the statistics tell big lies..but the reality is now seen in the video cameras so you dont need to read or listen the media propaganda lies anymore in North America,EU,Middle east,Asia and South America who look now like Africa and need help..
Yes Cuba Libre…religion did come back in Cuba but so is everywhere and yet people are living in a world getho hungry.
Cuba does big tourism aqnd it can be bigger, it has enough lands to feed weel 11 milion Cubans and even build nice homes for all…but who will do that, the government or party…? NO..but all the people who need to be the government…not just few technocrats or lazy burocrats or some old men who cant think right anymore, but the youths.
they must be the people who should create the party of the masses,99%,the NEW CUBA’s government and party so all life can be paradise and party in Cuba not just for the tourists, the outsiders…I am right Cuba libre or not?Where is Damir?….
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 23:39
Help…the elections are done in many countries but there are put in power only one or two who are paid by those who finance or manipulate to put them doing all kind of tricks and the people’s voice is never chosen…maybe because it is to big…but look what happen in the country that created democracy.the government was replaced with a technocrat and so was done in Italy…so people were ignored and remember pope lives there too…in a country where the democracy is gone for a while, because of the EU’s soviet union…so almost all world countries have one or two parties and others are a joke..just to look as democracy…but Cuba have chances to gather all its people to create a big party or organization in power called NEW CUBA so Cuba dont look that old
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 23:38
Humberto, those 6 dehydrated Cubans the Mexican coast guard picked up must have been millionaire baseball players. Playing baseball makes you very thirsty. Ordinary Cubans are too busy relaxing with Cuba Liar at luxury resorts and having rigorous dialectical discussions with Damir to bother with this peculiar sport of deep sea rafting.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 23:27
Marxist imperialists like Damir and C. Libre should keep their greedy hands off of Cuba and let the Cuban people decide their own future.
To see who’s right in this “debate,” all Castro has to do is hold elections. If the Cuban people vote for the communist party in free and honest elections, then I will be the first to apologize on this blog and will buy a deluxe che t-shirt.
But for some very mysterious reason, Damir and C. Libre and the other Marxist trolls out there don’t want Castro to hold elections. Why is that?

Cuba Libre maybe is a Cuban too. Let’s ask him; Is anything wrong to create a people’s organization like a NEW CUBA party example or not, so all 11 milion Cubans can be its members…?
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 23:10
Griffin…Cuba can have for sure a NEW CUBA party (or organization) because there is nothing wrong to be all people involved with big transformation of Cuba…and that is maybe the will of the communist party, not do the work by itself but let people be all involved…nothing wrong to work for Cuba all the Cubans…with ideas, projects, labor etc…I have a feeling that no one can be against such idea and if someone refuse that…he must be consider enemy of Cuba…so to seems that no one wants to be enemy but they just dont know…as Yoani wrotte. Still Damir’s answers will let us know what is the will of all Cubans…because he may be a Cuban inside Cuba
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 23:01
The truth is Miss Sanchez is starting to run out of ideas for her posts on here. The last two seemed meaningless, maybe she is beginning to realize how good she has it in Cuba.
Even her worshipers seem to have anything to write about so they simply critisize anyone who has something real and true to say.
When will people realize that Cubans have a unique way of life. Unlike any other anywhere in the world. Nowhere else I have been did I see people as easy going as you have in Cuba. Nowhere in Cuba did I see any stressed out people like we find in Canada or US. Nowhere did I see any case of driver`s rage like a driver beat up another driver because he cut him off on the road. In Canada and the US people say “never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” In Cuba people say” why do today what can be put off till tomorrow. Cuba is Cuba, and I hope it remains like it is.

MEXICO CITY — The Mexican Navy says it has rescued six Cubans from a makeshift boat adrift off the Caribbean island of Isla Mujeres.
The Navy says a recreational boat reported the drifting craft. Photos provided by the Navy showed what appeared to be a sort of mast and sail, with inner tubes strapped to the sides.
The Navy said Monday the six were rescued Sunday and were slightly dehydrated. The men said they left Cuba Jan. 25, aiming to reach Honduras.
They were turned over to immigration officials.
Mexico signed a pact with Cuba in 2008 promising to deport illegal Cuban migrants. Before, Mexican generally only briefly detained Cuban migrants and gave them a 10- to 30-day exit order, giving them time to make their way to the United States.

Anton,
Cubans cannot create a new political party because that is illegal. The Communist Party is the only legal party in Cuba.

Like I said, Damir, the message people get
from reading your posts is not the one you think it is. Your ignorant & hysterical screeds do not discredit or refute Yoani’s essays. Rather, you re-inforce her point with your pompous pseudo-intellectual boasts. Please keep it up.

From the photos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
Cuba looks more like North, central and South America and maybe like africa…but it can be changed for good in a short time. The people must not be indiferent but contribute all to rebuild Cuba now, so they all must contribute with their ideas to find the best ways to create a paradise in Cuba. What do you think Damir…Can Cuba change in few years or not and be better than other countries…?
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 21:26
Damir these are some videos from Cuba in 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....n&NR=1
and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3ZnaLuqMCo
To make better changes people should be involved with their ideas…11 million of Cubans not just few…Are you okey with that idea?
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 20:53
Damir is definitely Elmer Fudd. I’m convinced of it now. Faced with the prospect of a three-day weekend alone with his anger, by himself, he’s desperate for some company. He’s so lonely, he refers to himself in the third person so he can have a conversation with himself. Sad.
And Prof. C. Libre has added yet another plank to his platform: The unprincipled sellout. “Offer me a couple of million dollars and I too would ask for political asylum in the USA.” As a citizen of Canada, I think you’d have a hard time making your case before USCIS on the asylum claim.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 20:52
Damir…you asked to often… and you should get answers, you asking about answers…and that is good…..to get some answers, and you must be Cuban…and I like to talk to you,to answer to you in stead of Yoani. What is the questions or questions you have for me? Pretend I am Yoani…You should ask me…dont refuse…dont be quite…be a free men.
I have one for you example?
Why dont the Cubans now create a new fresh party where they can call as members and involve all cubans if they wish, and be called the NEW CUBA party so all people are free to think, talk, chose what is best and give their ideas how to change their Cuba and build a Cuban paradise because now…? So you can answer to my question Damir…
Damir…as you know…Cuba does not produce enough food to feed its people in quantity and quality, and drink from fruits, milk, eat eggs, cheese, buy all fruits, buy and have many cloths and furniture, entertain more and travell everywhere in Cuba or outside Cuba…maybe in South America…as visitors?….Few have this priviledge…only the elite, 1 % but 99 % of other people, the masses need to work now and find out for themselves how to create and to get the same priviledges in their paradise as the 1 %…and they dont need to do that with violence, but open, call for a NEW CUBA.If you live in Cuba or outside it you should answer me too so dont be afraid

What exiles are we talking about Miss Sanchez. The only people that are leaving Cuba nowadays are the professional baseball players and boxers that are being fished into capitalism with offers for contracts worth several million dollars. Offer me a couple of million dollars and I too would ask for political asylum in the USA. Its not the American way of life but the millions they can earn on a short term that attracts them to the USA.

See what I am talking about, team “yoani”?
Your little helpers are simply incapable of saying anything coherent. We all know that these 1 and a half losers are here to protect your non-existent “integrity”, but they are doing you even worse disservice by talking even worse nonsense that yourselves.
Come on, accept my invitation for a civilised and open debate.
You know I’ll disintegrate your credibility in a flash, and unmask your true nature. You have given out so much ammunition that all I have to do is to quote your own words to show falsification of the facts by yourselves.
Is that why you are scared to death and are refusing to participate in an open debate?
Because “democracy” you proselitise about is exchange of opinions and facing the questions about the things one says in a public arena.
And you have said way too many wrong things.
I am waiting.
If you keep refusing, you will demonstrate what I am saying: this site is all just a cia-fuelled ideological propaganda with intent to erode from within Cuban society and destroy it in the name of some false “ideals”, which ideals even the people behind this criminal monstruosity of a site do not believe in.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 20:11
The predictability of the content posted by the 1 and a half erson strong support brigade of the team “yoani’s” personal pioneers is based on ignorance, ideological numness and general failure in elementary school.
If I didn’t know that numerous nicks here have one or two authors behind it, I’d be sure of it after reading posts under the latest temporary newcomer, the author of the post 89.
Take this for example:
“The West would have preferred the predictable stability of Kadaffi, while encouraging him to moderate and liberalize. The Libyan people had another idea. The chaos of the militias today is the consequence of the ill-considered & poorly designed NATO mission. This is not what the West wanted, but it is what the inept leadership of Obama has wrought.”
First off, it’s Ghadaffi, not Kadaffi. Then the content…
The chaos is apparently all due to local militias, not the nato.
And who had armed the local militias?
The nato.
And who is unspoken and undisputed leader of that nazist military machine? usa.
And who makes the body of nato? “western” capitalist countries.
Hence, it IS nato’s and west doing.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 19:52
The statement from the post 89:
“The comparison to Cuba (about Syria, apparently), made by Damir, is quite inaccurate. ”
The point is that Damir has never compared Cuba and Syria. Damir compared the criminal activities of the nazist gulag usa in Libya and Syria. One can easilly see, it is a subject of analysis alredy in hands of historians, how the concept of “Divide et impera” by the criminals is applied everywhere in the world.
Create a pretext, organise opposition, arm them and “come to aid the innocent people”.
We can see what those innocent people are now doing in Lybia.
Damir was talking about this horror over a month ago. Damir had posted the link to the video made by Serbian news team in Lybia, in a city where the nazist media was claiming to witness the massacres on “innocent civilians”, yet the Serbian news team filmed absolute calm, peace and order. Interwieved people themselves said that it is a false propaganda about massacres in their city, bombing raids 24/7 by Lybian (Ghaddafi’s) army and air forces, indiscriminate raping, and killing by the army.
Now the news blackout is hiding the truth: the rape, murder, torture, destruction of homes, bombing of all sorts, armed “liberators” of Libya killing thousands on a daily basis.
They rape women, men AND children before brutally murdering them.
The situation is a dash less severe in Egypt.
THAT is the “western style democracy”. THAT is what the nazist criminals, obama bin barrack and his servants from within the nato and EU want for Cuba too.
THAT is the comparison, not the comparison of the two countries as the poster in the post 89 falsely claims.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 19:40
Cuba Libre (La MENTIROTA & HOMOPHOBE)! DUDE, WHY DO YOU KEEP TRYING TO SHIFT THE CONVERSATION TO OTHER UNRELATED TOPICS?? IS YOU BARREL TOO LOW TO EVEN SCRAPE??? JE JE JE!
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 19:39
I am waiting the team “yoani”. Do not be affraid, I am not like your pioneers here screaming as soon as someone asks a simple question that destroys yor delusional ideology in a flash.
I offer a civilised discussion with legitimate questions on issues you have posted here. As simple as that. You have seen all of those questions already in my posts. There may be more, should you be so crazy to post more nonsense and lies.
Remember that I applauded one post, sadly one single posts in all these years, about the young medical doctor.
That was one good post. But, more of an accident that has never happened again thanks to your ideological blindness.
One could spend an eternity destroying stupidity of your little pioneers here, posting under dozens of different nicks to create a mirage of “many” people agreeing with you, but they are a brainless minority, and are not the exposed face of this site.
There’s no point in cutting the grass when it’s the tree that’s blocking the view.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 19:29
So when will the team “yoani” collect the courage to accept my invitation to an open debate and answer some questions about their posts here?
Come on team “yoani”. Live up to your own demands. You have posted a number of lies, it is now fair that everyone who reads them asks for explanations.
Your own words.
Or, are you busy collecting the money from foreign white “gods” for doing the dirty work for them?

C. Libre asks: “why should they force their beliefs…”
I ask myself why C. Libre forces his beliefs on the defenseless Cuban people? Why does he intervene in Cuba’s internal affairs and try to stop Cubans from protesting? Why is he such an imperialist?
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 17:13
Cuba Liar,
Are you trying to argue that NATO is ignoring Syria because they have no oil? Or are you saying yes, Syria does so have oil? Pick one point and try to make it, ok?
I know you have a reading comprehension problem, but what I wrote was that Syria had very little oil. I didn’t say none.
This is from Wiki: “Syria is a relatively small oil producer, accounting for just 0.5 percent of the global production in 2010.[16][17]
And on the topic of invading defenceless counties and enforcing an alien way of life on the local people, isn’t that what the Communist USSR did in Afghanistan? Yes, then did. Now has the US forced a new way of life on Afghanistan? Has the US converted them all to Christianity? Nope. Has the US closed their mosques, as the USSR tried to do? Nope. Has the US forced American political system onto the Afghans? Nope. They established their own constitution and set up the system they are now using. That may be why it’s still a corrupt and backwards country, but that’s their choice.
Who armed Saddam and helped keep in power for 28 years? That would be Russia. Same with Libya and Syria, two of Russia’s biggest customers of military hardware. Did you know that Belarusian Spetznat fought for Kaddafi against the militias?
In Somalia, the US wasn’t forcing anything onto the people, except for food aid, which the militias tried to stop. I guess that was bad of America, to try to feed the starving people of Somalia.
By the way, did you know that Castro sent soldiers to Ethiopia in the 1980’s to fight against Somalia? That was during the brutal Ethiopian Communist dictatorship of Mengistu. Castro also sent soldiers to Angola & Mozambique, spreading war and destruction and killing across Africa for 2 decades all in the name of Socialist Revolution.
The USSR armed and directed the Communist take over in Viet Nam too. The US tried to prevent that, not to force any other way of life on them, but to keep them free. Thanks to assholes like you, the US withdrew and the Communists defeated South Vietnam.
So you want to talk about invading and forcing a alien way of life on people, look at the history of Communism. There could be nothing more alien to humanity than Communism.

#85 Anonimo,
The USA did not learn anything in Irak, just like they didn`t learn anything in Vietnam, nor in Afghanistan, nor in Somalia, nor in any other country where they tried to force their beliefs and way of life. The USA have their beliefs and way of life and thats perfectly alright if thats the way they want it. My question is why should they force their beliefs and way of life unto defenseless countries using their human rights cause as an excuse to destroy and overtake them.
You say Syria doesn`t have any oil, Google Syria and learn my friend before stating lies and blasphemies. Coming straight from Wikipedia, “Syria’s main exports include crude oil, refined products, raw cotton, clothing, fruits, and grains.”
N.A.T.O. only seems to defend Human rights in countries that have the black gold as I stated. Where may I ask was the U.N. and N.A.T.O. when over 800,000 Tutsis in Rwanda were executed in 1994 during the genocide. Why would they intervene there, everyone knows there is no oil in Rwanda.
Febrero 17th, 2012 at 16:28
hi guys I know you miss me but I am busy now in the EU new soviet union where a big change and revolution is needed and a new Che just came in power http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Schulz
he likes books and socialism and now in contact with him to be careful that he is not going to punish the opposite and the dissidents like in past communist countries…So we have to help Europe not be communistic too like North America…
I was thinking still about Cuba…that it may have a 3rd version of it future because the other two that I predicted are bad maybe…and we all dont will that fall. So what is the version 3;
Cuba dissidents and simple hungry people will create a new party, call it the New Cuba and they will have members and start working together with the communist party Cubans to do big changes like; get out all the people in jails…they are all victimes maybe, start building more greenhouses, food farms and clean all the bushes of Cuba, build new homes and hotels and call all the world to come for cheap deals and ask for voluntares all over the world and start rewritting the history, call the Miami Cubans to come home and rebuild it also, open small and medium businesses and put young people everywhere in charge and tell the old one to go retire in some beach or outside the country if they feel scared or not comfortable with the big changes to make the best country as suppose to be,a paradise…as Havana looked in 1950…which some say was a las vegas or south miami type…but same say that was a whore house for americans and others. To prevent such a catastrophe or big fall and the start going out of limits the big crimes, destruction, prostitution, anger and hunger…and maybe a civil war…there is needed right now to be created a new Cuban party,of the New Cuba, the 21st century one…which is hold still, hostage by those who fear the revensh for the past…and who hold priviledges like all world elites. If Cubans, simple people create the New Cuba party, there will be 11 million as members in it and start building all a new Cuba and the embargo will be lifted after that…but the Miami Cubans should come all back to work and invest there also
garanty it will work because there will be all as members inclueding the present left party because New Cuba s party is all the Cubans or the people’s party…This is a call for yoani too and other bloggers who should know that one or few candles or stars dont light enough but the sun bring the changes, gathering all stars, candles

EXCELLENT REPORT THAT CUTS TO THE CHASE!
U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT: Cuba Is Reforming, But Not Nearly Enough
February 17,
Cuban officials say that the reforms are permanentâthere’s no going back. Perhaps, but that wasn’t true with comparable, though more modest, reforms of the 1990s, when Cuba was coping with the loss of Soviet subsidies after the U.S.S.R. collapsed. The crisis ended; so, largely, did the reforms.
The latest reforms are intended not to change Cuba’s economic system but to “stabilize” itâand to make the Castro brothers’ political system “sustainable on a long-term basis.” As a European statesman once said of Gorbachev’s perestroika in the U.S.S.R., that is “like trying to make roasted snowballs”âbut it’s what RaĂșl Castro intends. So these reforms come with strict, predefined limits.
There is no privatization or devolution of large enterprises or government monopolies; no privatization of the professional occupations; no privatization of the financial “sector”âsuch as it is. Foreign investment is limited to minority shares in joint ventures with state-owned enterprises. And the government aims to extract an uneconomically high “take” from any joint ventures seeking to exploit Cuba’s promising offshore oil deposits. As Cuba’s Foreign Minister emphasized: the reforms are limitedâand they’ll stay that way.
Trouble is, limited reform can never generate enough prosperity to reverse the appallingly dilapidated, squalid conditions of Cuba’s society. Havana is a wreck. Its once stately buildings are shabby and decrepit beyond imagination. Judging from our brief glimpse, the countryside isn’t any better. There’s remarkably little to show for 53 years of the “revolution”âpractically no buildings constructed after 1959; few cars and little traffic; crumbling infrastructure; healthy-looking, nourished people shabbily dressed with apparently lots of time on their handsâand very little money in their pockets.
In some ways, the revolution’s main achievement is to have transformed Cuba from a client of the United States into a dependency, first, of the Soviet Union and then, when the U.S.S.R. collapsed, of Venezuela. So after Venezuela’s cancer-stricken Hugo Chavez can no longer support it, who will be next to prop up the Castro brothers’ fantasy island? Iran, perhaps? Or North Korea?

THE POPE WILL BE VISITING SANTIAGO DE CUBA TO VISIT THE VIRGIN OF CHARITY IN THE TOWN OF EL COBRE ON HIS TRIP, NOT HAVANA! THE EASTERN REGION IS WHAT IS GIVING THE CASTROFASCISTS THE MOST TROUBLE BECAUSE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CRADLE OF REVOLUTIONS! THIS MIGHT BE A DIFFERENT POPE, WITH DIFFERENT CRITERIA BUT SO IS THE AREA AND THE PEOPLE HE WILL BE SURROUNDED WITH! AND INTERNET, CELL PHONES, TWITTER, YOUTUBE, INDEPENDENT BLOGGERS AND DISSIDENTS WILL MAKE THIS A VERY INTERESTING POINT IN CUBAN HISTORY!
MIAMI HERALD: Cuban dissident tells Congress Pope must intervene in Cuba- Cuban dissident would like to see the pontiff address political oppression during his visit to the communist island nation next month.
WASHINGTON — Speaking by telephone direct from Cuba, one of the countryâs best-known political dissidents on Tuesday told Congress that Pope Benedict XVI should use his power and visibility as a world leader to shine a light on human rights abuses and political oppression under the Castro regime during his upcoming visit to the communist island nation.
If he has an opportunity to meet with the pope, he will ask him to be an advocate for the oppressed, Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet told the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee. He spoke through a translator in testimony delivered over the telephone from Cuba.
“I would say to him, that I would love for him to lobby for our freedom of speech and for a multi-party system, so that everyone can participate and be represented,” Biscet said. “We hope that his coming will bring great change to our country.”
The congressional committee did not announce Biscet’s name before the hearing, out of concern that Cuban authorities would detain him before he was able to testify from the U.S. Interests Section in Havana. During the hearing, Biscet’s photo was projected on two separate video screens. His image was on several posters propped up along the wall in the hearing room.
President George W. Bush awarded Biscet the Medal of Freedom in 2007 while he was still serving a 25-year sentence for his opposition to Fidel Castro’s regime. Biscet accused the Cuban government in the mid-1990s of allowing and covering up botched abortions, and was imprisoned from 1999 to late 2002. He had been free for 37 days when he was arrested again.
Biscet, 50, was freed last March as part of the Cuban governmentâs decision to release more than 125 political prisoners â a move that came after pressure by the Catholic Church. Some congressional leaders, including Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, have nominated him for a Nobel Prize.
His testimony Thursday came at considerable personal risk and could lead to his re-arrest, he acknowledged. “Everything is possible,” Biscet said. “We’re under constant supervision.”
Rep. Christopher Smith, R-N.J. and Rep. Albio Sires, D-N.J., said they would write to the pope asking him to meet with Biscet. Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, said the message to the church couldn’t be more clear.
“Now it is up to Catholic Church to respond to Dr. Biscet,” Rivera said. “It is up to the pope himself to respond to Dr. Biscet. I would hope they would be responsive to Dr. Biscet’s hope and aspirations and his request of the pope and the Catholic Church.”
Biscet on Thursday told the committee that the police in Cuba beat him, disfigured his face and broke his foot in an effort to âstop me from defending human rights.”
He also described the conditions he experienced in prison in Cuba. Some prisoners were undressed collectively, disregarding “any respect for human dignity,” he said. They were handcuffed at their ankles and hands for more than 12 hours and as many as 24 hours. Some were hanged by their hands, with their feet barely touching the ground.
Cuban journalist Normando Hernandez Gonzalez, also a recently freed political prisoner who now lives in Miami, told the committee that women are treated with particular brutality by police. Some men have reported that their captors undressed them, screamed obscenities at them, touched their genitals, and threatened them with rape, he said.
“I still have fresh in my mind the screams of prisoners who were being freshly tortured,” he said. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to ever forget that.”
Sires called Biscet’s testimony untainted by the politics of the Miami exile community. That should give the Castro regime pause, Sires said, because Biscet is one of their own.
“He’s not a product of Miami Beach, he’s not a product of Miami, he’s not a product of Cubans in exile,” he said. “This is a man that was educated in Cuba, and he sees that this is a dictator, that this a country that oppresses human rights. That this is a country that allows no one the freedom to express themselves. And he’s personally seen what they do to people who are seeking freedom of expression.”
Biscet on Thursday vowed to continue what he described as a non-violent movement to change Cuba. Biscet said they expect little to improve while both Fidel Castro and his brother, Raul, remain alive â but said that they can’t wait for their deaths to agitate for change in Cuba.
“So we will create change on our own,” he said. “We are hoping that we will have the capacity to create non-violent coercion and pressure in order to actually install that political change ourselves.”

REUTERS: Cuba says U.S. climbs to 5th leading trade partner-HAVANA | Thu Aug 14, 2008
(Reuters) - The United States ranked among communist Cubaâs top five trading partners for the first time in 2007 despite the decades-old U.S. trade embargo, as U.S. agriculture sales increased by $100 million. Trade data for 2007 posted on the Web site of Cubaâs National Statistics Office placed the United States fifth at $582 million, compared with $484 million in 2006, including shipping costs.
The United States, which began selling food to Cuba in 2002 under an amendment to the embargo, placed seventh in 2006 and 2005.

About what Yoani is writing about, I knew a communist in Cuba who went to all of Fidel’s rallies. He used to tell me he admired Fidel, even as late as 5 years ago.
I saw him last year and he told me going to those rallies were the worst days of the year for him, and that cheering for Fidel was completely humiliating. He laughed when I asked if he still admired Fidel. He said he stopped believing in the late 1960s, and ten years later couldn’t stand either Fidel or the communist party. He said it was just about feeding his family, and he would have escaped from Mariel or by other means if there was a safe way to get all his family out. Instead he was forced to repudiate the people he wanted to join.

I’ll save Professor Libre the effort of his worthy investigations: Sol Group is set up as a separate corporation in the USA.
You see, Professor Libre, it makes absolutely no difference to Melia if they conduct business in the USA under their international name or a US name. When you stay at a Melia or Barcelo hotel in the USA, you are giving money to their parents in Spain.
For Melia and every other non-US corporation in the world, the embargo does not exist. It only hurts certain US-based businesses, nobody else, not even Cuba since they have no need to trade with the USA.

now enough with Che but lets postthe last comment for Cube and concentrate with the EU revolutions.Future of Cuba may be these;
1.Castro dies, masses cry…country improve in food production and open more with the world but run by same old and new elites being big capitalist-communists,people live a free getho life, grow crime, prostitution…more outside goods coming to island and this reality may be forever because now is no difference between Cuba-USA,EU,world..they all are run by communist-capitalists and they all are as gethos in the majority, masses…allmost the same kind of gethos, people, new junk generations
2,After Castro dies…Usa or Miami Cubans or world go in Cuba where communist-capitalists live good, dont care for Cuba what happen or they emigrate as rich outside Cuba which will change fast,be all private businneses, small, medium, big, grow tourism, crime, prostitution, mafias, artists, corruption, roberies, misery, homeless etc…
Racism will come back, class separation, but more will profit leftists used to steal the country resources, and those who are now disitents, patriots will be hunted again

Cuba Liar,
Egypt & Syria have very little oil. They are both net importers of oil, especially Egypt. Libya does have lots of oil of course. The West would have preferred the predictable stability of Kadaffi, while encouraging him to moderate and liberalize. The Libyan people had another idea. The chaos of the militias today is the consequence of the ill-considered & poorly designed NATO mission. This is not what the West wanted, but it is what the inept leadership of Obama has wrought.
Syria will be even worse. The killing there has only gotten started. Iran is arming the Assad regime and they even have their fighters leading the killing. Qatar is arming the rebels while the Saudis are providing money. The US is still trying to figure out what if anything they should or can do. Oh, I’m sure the US is involved, but Obama doesn’t want to take a leading role in what could be an Iraq style civil war.
The comparison to Cuba, made by Damir, is quite inaccurate. Cuba does not have the same mix of ideological & religious extremists that Libya has, (or Syria for that matter) nor does Cuba have the vast open borders of these desert states. The risk of a Libya style militia driven chaos in a post-Castro Cuba is not there.
No. The Cuban Communist system will soon collapse, like an old building in Centro Habana. One day it’s there, then suddenly it’s not. People will stare at the rubble & wonder how it managed to keep standing so long. The last old party leaders will scramble for Venezuela or Nicaragua or where ever they can find refuge with their fellow Marxist fossils. The Cuban people, who are civilized, educated and productive (if given a chance) will be left to sort out the mess and rebuild their cursed nation after 50 plus years of Fidel’s miserable rule.

Che was the main personazh of Cuba’s fate and the wars, revolition, changes, socialism with both good and bad was because of Che who also did bring Cuba-Usa-Russia crisis.
These were the factors of Che’s personazh or player in the scene;
1.born in rich, liberal, modern, good aristocrat family or nr 1…as EU monarch elite
2.was like Church serving boy…they all become from divine to hell bad boys later
3.stayed,played as child with rich and poor, black and white…allmost like Elvis,Christ type open with all masses,loved-hated by them..
4.big charisma,big adventure lover,big ego,big idealist,big revolutionary,big proude
5.a big traveler, discovered poverty and abuse agaist Souh America, wanted to free it.
6.history,natyre,God,creation put, sent him in proper places, read books, see and meet proper people, playyers but is in the dark who was behind those players like his wifein Mexico, his friends…meeting Castro who cud be first John Baptists for young Che which live was a mix of Jesus,Napoleon,Garibaldi,Hitler,Duce,Mao,rebelle Usa’s presidents and many war and revolutions leaders in history..a big mix of them in fate…and he was as big as them in history for his big demons and holy divine actions..as a holder of all of them which send him to fall and tragedy in the end…Moxt of the big players in history had the same end…even artist Elvis,J.Morrison…so Che was another big star in the nigh, but also brought tragedy for many…and french revolution was run by the same holy church boys who killed priest..!Where they sent and working for Satan or God we cant know thay here on Earth where is a hell now more than paradise, more Satan than God,more evil than good
7. Che was against the big world elites of east and west who suffer the world…and in that time he was alone, but today all youths, adults and old men think like him so he was not send there as a mission only for a country or a continent but the world
8.Che was doctor,he was used with dead people, blood and he become a doctor-butcher but if he was notgoing to study doctor and if South America was not a colony he was going to be maybe a movie star or a mafia guy in Cuba’s casinos or a prist or pope..

Post 85, yo have no idea what you are talking about. Egypt and Tunisia started through the “social media”. Since the internet was severely limited in those countries, how did the “revolutionaries” acces these media?
Just like the pin-up granny of this site. Through the satellite phones, laptops, satellite modems and infrastructure provided by foreign embassies in those two countries.
Do yourself a favour and search a little on the net. You will find hundreds of interviews with some of those “revolution leaders” where they describe in greater detail how without the “west”, these “popular revolts” would not have been posible.
And everyone, note the second report from Amnesty International, just out today. “Militia in Libya out of control.” Thousands of people are captured, locked, raped (women, men AND children. No exceptions.) indiscriminately.
The so-called “transitional council” has no control over the horrible crimes that are being committed by thousands of armed thugs who are effectivelly rulling the country, one city at a time.
What a beautiful example what kind of “democracy and freedom” would the team “yoani:” provide in Cuba should they manage to wrestle the power away from their idols Castros.
Hell is its’ better known name.

Well spotted posts 82 and 83. hank/help is the same person, so if one feels like a stupid idiot, the other wil too. John is probably just another nick by the same author. Hence all this common stupidity among the supposed “different” posters.
As you can also see, they do not grasp even the basic capitalist terminology. Funny is how they still root for “some kind of pragmatic capitalism”.
The fact that it is disintegrating before their eyes seems to mean little for these delusional derelicts.
I’m allowing myself a little freedom of speech since they called us idiots.
Exercising my democratic right to self-defence.
But I’m sure that my post will be eliminated by the “democratic” “friendly” tranlator. since I am not the supporter of the team “yoani” and their rediculous propaganda and blatant lies, I am not allowed to write words like “idiot”, or “stupid”.
That democratic freedom is usually reserved for the “boys” only. fake pamela, aka gloria esteban, is another fine examle with her insulting hysteria. She can write whatever rude word she wants.
She’s a member of the club… They have more rights than the rest of us.
They can insult those who disagree with the party line, attack, bark and bite.
After all, we are “bitter and full of hatred” for asking a simple question: what is your problem with a foreign country that you have never visited, and never will?
Who and what gives you right to criticise it so bitterly and hysterically?
That is what the nazists do.

Cuba Libre, the west had nothing to do with the Arab spring ( except Libya ). USA administration lovoe that certain nation are kept on a short leash by their dictators. If you have free elections in those countires, it will be the muslim broterhood type of government who will control everything. USA learned their lesson from Iraq. It was easier to control him than to control the actual kaos. As for Cuba , again you are wrong as usual. Corporations make lots of cash from the other tiny Carribean islands.Imagine the money they could make in Cuba. There are over 1 million Caandian tourists /year. if you open Cuba to American tourists , you’ll get at least another 3-4 million.

#79 Help,
I don`t know why I even bother to try and explain things to you. I am beginning to wonder if you are really that stupid or if your just playing ignorant.
“HOTEL PROPERTIES MANAGED BY CRESTLINE HOTELS & RESORTS.
Crestline Hotels & Resorts, the hotel management operations subsidiary of BarcelĂł Crestline Corporation, currently manages and leases more than 47hotels, resorts, conference centers and convention hotels with nearly 8,600 rooms. in 11 states and the District of Columbia. ”
Crestline Hotels are a subsidiary of Barcelo. But then again do you know the meaning of subsidiary, I suggest you google it and maybe your blind eyes will open. And do you know why subsidiaries were created? I took the time to look it up for you.
“Subsidiaries are separate, distinct legal entities for the purposes of taxation and regulation. For this reason, they differ from divisions, which are businesses fully integrated within the main company, and not legally or otherwise distinct from it.[6]”
Yet another capitalist scheme to bypass laws made by itself when it comes to making money.

You can keep draming of the “Cuban spring”, but I doubt there will ever be one. All the imperialist countries have nothing or very little to gain by invading Cuba. There is lots of oil in Egypt, which explains why N.A.T.O. was quick to build and support the uproar there. We all know N.A.T.O. invader Irak because of all the “weapons of maas destruction” they possesed and not because of all the oil they posess. They neither invaded Afghanistan because of its oil, but because of the Human rights violation done by the Taliban. They started and backed up an uprising in Libya and then overthrowing Ghadafi, because of the harm they were doing to its dissidents, and obviously not because it has so much oil. Now look at the total disorder they have caused in Syria, and what do you know, Syria is also an oil producer..
There will never be a “Cuban spring”. Only things in Cuba are bananas and pineapples, which imperialist countries can easily get from other Latin American countries that they already control. The truth is the US still doesn`t digest their defeat in the Bay of Pigs almost 50 years ago, the reason while the still hold their blockade against Cuba.
But maybe, just maybe I may be wrong. Maybe if one day Cubans manage to make sling shots strong enough to throw pebbles from Havana to Miami, then it will justify an American invasion. Cuba now posesses “weapons of mass destruction”.

Yet another accomplishment by Nato forces who managed once again to destabilize a country that lived in peace. Yes there was a so called “dictator” ruling it but yet harmony reigned until the “big bully” raised hell and havock amongst it citizens, and finally overthrew its government with force. Where is the difference I ask between the so called attrocities done bt Ghadafi, and what`s going on today in Lybia??

*******
Barcelo is one of the world’s largest hospitality companies and is based
in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The company is 100% owned by the Barcelo family
and has been run by three generations of family members. Barcelo and
affiliates own, manage and lease 138 hotels in 18 countries across four
continents, including the Barcelo Crestline portfolio in the United States.
Today, BarcelĂł Crestline hotel property management company has significant equity interests in several upscale hotels, and through its operating company, Crestline Hotels & Resorts, BarcelĂł Crestline’s impressive repertoire of managed properties in the U.S. includes more than 48 hotels, resorts and conference centers and convention hotels with nearly 8,700 rooms.

The title of that lecture will be “end the oppression of Spanish hotel chains that can’t open in the USA because they do business with Cuba”
Professor of history C. Libre’s last lecture, at the Melia Habana, will cover the bad old days of Batista and the enormous progress made since Fidel took over. Finally I finish watching the Che’s video…and it was an interesting story..but.
If you see Cubans they look better when Che Guevara left than after…when his body returned to Cuba…in the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related
and the question is how can a nice aristocratic family boy be later a men who like violence, wars and killing other humans, good or bad…that I dont understand. In the video most of the people of Cuba looked that they liked, loved their new system and its elite…and now you see them changed….no more extreme true love..One thing I did not understand in the video;what happen with the peasents dream, their lands, the agrare reform…did they take the lands from the peasents back and created the cooperatives with them or what…?(that was bigg mistake as now in USA)
I just cud not figure out why when Batista left and there was a government who wanted peace why did not the new government choose cooperations with other Cubans, their parties and post Batista’s government but most of them ended dead and were jailed…when they all cud be working together to rebuild Cuba, perfect it,give to the people bush lands to work so the peasents cud produce food for all,and also keep all the private shops and the nice small and medium businesses which is good, nothing wrong…and that was going to be good for all Cubans.Cuba’s story in this video remind me now USA,Canada and EU…where in every country, state and city and farms…all the people are destroyed in lands, food productions, businesses and that is done maybe by the same old world elites, the banks and corporations who destroyed and regulated, taxed, and rob them…to starve and put all in debts.A communist-capitalist tragedy…Seeing what happen in the last 100 years is a tragedy-comedy…
I think that someone brainwashed the Cubans with wrong ideas and acts that happen in all communists countries who went crazy and to extreme and maybe that was done indirectly from the west democracies who used them, extremism. Maybe Che figure that out later…Havana was the best world city before and later became a getho…and the peasents did profit free lands but maybe they lost them also later…(cooperatives;to stupid…and was done to starve the people).
I think that the communism theory was created with the idea to make big mistake so it can collapse later…but can the brain work when the stomach is empty…not only the brain but all organs, all the body dies also..and now that is what is happening…a world starvation to kill everything…there in the brain, organs and the whole body of the human stupid race.
But maybe Che understood the mistakes as it did show in the video but instead of fixing them maybe he was not let do that)…or just giving up and going home…he went to create the same problems, crisis to other countries…lands&gethos..wast its people as in the video with Che where were… masskillings and wars and destruction.
It is interesting and unusuall men Che… a person that Hollywood should make movies…because it shows how a simple nice ill boy, as a weak youth later with the gun…can be so extreme men later. It seems also he disliked the socialism that was infact imported from the east…and he wanted something different.maybe a good doctor or a movie star or he cud be the best priest or even pope because he looked like Jesus and he wanted a good world…but the priests dont like only the good or the left wing people but the others also…all good and bad, left and right wings to fly in the sky again as a sun

Hank #72 - I think you’re on to something. I’ve mentioned the “bitter” factor before. Damir, Cuba Libre and let’s not forget the momentarily quiet Un Soricel, I suspect have not made much of themselves, have achieved little, and are very unhappy, very bitter people. You may as talk to a lamp post by asking C.L. how does it feel to be wrong. He just believes he is right about everything. You can’t change that. And he never answers questions, especially the one we’ve all been asking, WHEN ARE THEY MOVING TO CUBA.

OMG! CUBA VOTED AGAINST THE RESOLUTION CONDEMNING SYRIA? WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO? JE JE JE! THE CASTROFASCIST MAKE IT SOOOOOOOOO EASY TO EXPOSE THEIR WAYS!! JE JE JE!
L.A. TIMES (where I live): United Nations condemns human rights violations in Syria-Emily Alpert in Los Angeles
The U.N. General Assembly condemned âwidespread and systematic violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities” and declared its backing for an Arab League plan that calls for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down in a Thursday resolution.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on the Syrian government to stop the bloodshed. âThe longer we debate, the more people will die,â he told reporters in Vienna.
The vote for the resolution, which is not legally binding, was 137 to 12 with 17 abstentions; several countries complained that they were unable to cast ballots due to problems with the voting machine, the Associated Press reported. Russia and China, which vetoed a more forceful resolution in the Security Council, voted against the measure.
[Updated 3:36 p.m. Feb. 16: The 12 countries that voted against the resolution were Belarus, Bolivia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Ecuador, Iran, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.]
The Assad government stands accused of waging a bloody crackdown against opposition protesters who began a series of street demonstrations nearly a year ago. The Syrian government says it has been attacked by terrorists; the U.S. ambassador to Syria recently said government forces “consistently” attack civilian areas.

Febrero 16th, 2012 at 14:50
Sorry I am drunk…with brandy, but waiting for the bus in the airport in EU..I did see the statistics Humberto posted here…and I think; if for every Cuban now is 50 kg rice,50 kg beans,50 kg sugar per year that is a big wealth..so I am surprised why they want to leave cuba which has improved from the capitalism in the last 5 years…I remember when i was in Cuba talking to its people I was asking them why dont you clean Cuba from its bushes and grow food in it have some farms and greenhouses given to you to work in it and feed yourself and other Cuban. They answered me that government doesnt like that idea because is a capitalist idea…but it looks that they have done this now…because before they march in the street parading for the revolution and socialism…they need a full stomach with rice, beans, sugar and now they do have 150 kg of this mix trio food per year for every Cuban…that is a good news…so people of Cuba should work and clean more bushes and grow more food in cuba’s lands so we can feed north america and Eu too.

MIAMI HERALD: Cuban dissident Fariñas says police to punish agent who threatened him- Police tell Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas that the government agent who threatened to kill him will be punished. - By Juan O. Tamayo
Cuban police have told dissident Guillermo Fariñas they will punish a former officer who threatened to kill him, an unprecedented move that Fariñas said should embolden other dissidents attacked by security agents.
âThis is a blow against impunity,â said Fariñas. âPeaceful opposition activists can now file lawsuits for injuries, for threats, for attempted murders, against those who pummel them constantly.â
Fariñas said National Revolutionary Police officials told him Monday he will be allowed to witness the session next week where the man who threatened him, former Interior Ministry Maj. Miguel Morejó Padrón, will be sanctioned.
Morejó will be hit with a restraining order to stay away from Fariñas, a warning that he will go to jail if he threatens the dissident again and a 300 peso fine, just high enough to trigger a criminal record, the dissident said.
Fariñas, winner of the European Parliamentâs Sakharov Prize in 2010 for his peaceful opposition activism, said it was the first known incident in which a government agent is punished for acting against dissidents.
Facing his many public complaints against MorejĂł, âthe authorities didnât want this grinding, demoralizing media show and decided to sacrifice one of its officers,â he told El Nuevo Herald by telephone.
Cuban dissidents regularly complain of beatings, harassments and threats at the hands of security forces and government-organized mobs when they attempt to stage public protests. Some have been rushed to hospitals for treatment of injuries.
Fariñas said the death threat came on Nov. 2, when he went to the Arnaldo Milian Castro Hospital in his hometown of Santa Clara to visit dissidents Alcides Rivera and Roland Ferrer, who had been admitted amid lengthy hunger strikes.
MorejĂł, who had left the Interior Ministry with the rank of major and was second in command of the hospitalâs security, intercepted him, hit him and threatened to kill him, he added. MorejĂłâs job in the ministry, in charge of domestic security, and the reasons for his departure were not known.
Fariñas was detained and when he was released on the 4th he went to the National Revolutionary Police to file a complaint. MorejĂł was summoned and boasted âthat he threatened to kill me, and that he would kill me if he had to,â the dissident added.
The police initially told him they would do nothing, but he returned to the police station three times and stood in front of the building in protest. He was arrested each time, and released hours or days later.
Fariñas said police told him a âmultidisciplinaryâ team had examined the case and decided on the warning and fine because MorejĂł had no previous criminal record.
Cuban authorities regularly deny allegations of abuses by the islandâs security forces and boast that its National Revolutionary Police and State Security agents at the Interior Ministry are superbly trained.
There have been reports that some security agents were privately disciplined after committing abuses. But there are no known cases in which the victims were informed of the punishments, or were allowed to witness them.

KEY PHRASES: “Cuba Reports” “National Statistics Office”, “But it is too early to say reforms in general are working as the figures could simply reflect there have been no hurricanes in three years,” he added, asking his name not be used due to restrictions on talking with foreign journalists.” , “vested interests are holding back progress.”
REUTERS: Cuba reports food output up 8.7 percent in 2011
*Non-sugar agriculture up 8.7 percent
*Rice, beans and corn up significantly
*Export crops remain at historic lows
HAVANA , Feb 16 (Reuters) - Cuba’s non-sugar agricultural production increased 8.7 percent in 2011, the government said this week, an indication reforms aimed at reversing a farm crisis and cutting food imports may be kicking in.
Produce output was up 11.5 percent and livestock and related products 6 percent, according to the report issued by the National Statistics Office on its Web Page (www.one.cu).
The upturn followed a 2.5 percent decline in 2010.
The cash-strapped country is still producing less food than in 2005 and importing 60 percent to 70 percent of what it consumes at an estimated cost of $1.5 billion to $2 billion annually.
Food prices increased 20 percent in 2011 as limited market reforms, higher prices paid by the state for agricultural products and a slight reduction in imports countered the increase in domestic output.
President Raul Castro, looking to cut imports and supply a growing food-service sector, has made increasing food production a priority since he took over for his ailing brother in 2006.
Castro has decentralized decision making, opened more space for farmers to sell directly to consumers, leased small plots of fallow state lands to 150,000 would-be tillers and raised prices the state pays for produce, but to date has stopped short of allowing market forces to take hold.
“There is no doubt increased investments in key imports such as rice and beans are now showing results,” a local agricultural expert said.
“But it is too early to say reforms in general are working as the figures could simply reflect there have been no hurricanes in three years,” he added, asking his name not be used due to restrictions on talking with foreign journalists.
Looking at two key imports and Cuban staples, domestic production of rice was up 43.7 percent while local output of beans rose 66.1 percent. But at the current rate, that would only account for perhaps 20 percent of the 700,000 tonnes of rice and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of beans consumed annually.
Corn, another key import, saw domestic production rise 9.1 percent. Cuba does not produce wheat and has only begun to produce soy on an experimental basis with Brazilian assistance.
Output of export crops, from sugar and coffee to tobacco, citrus and cacao remained at historic lows.
While the government still assigns farmers crops, monopolizes food distribution and the supply of critical farm inputs, the report indicated a higher percentage of produce was being sold by farmers directly to consumers.
Huge state farms and cooperatives continue to sit on fallow land and despite controlling some 60 percent of the arable land produce just 30 percent of the food.
Most Cuban farmers praise Castro’s measures and promises to allow market forces to play a bigger role in the future, but complain bureaucracy and vested interests are holding back progress. (Reporting by Marc Frank; Editing by David Gregorio)

YAHOO SPORTS: Phillies and Yankees want Cuban Jorge Soler - By Mark J. Miller
While Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes (pictured) got a lot of attention this offseason for his potentially mighty bat, visit with the Miami Marlins, and eventual signing with the Oakland Athletics, there is another young fellow from Cuba who has been occupying some space in the minds of a few of baseball’s general managers.
While Jorge Soler, a 19-year-od outfielder, can’t be offered a contract yet since he hasn’t been clear yet by the Office of Foreign Assets Control, Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan reports that “teams (have) surreptitiously let it be known what they’re willing to pay.”
The word was that the Chicago Cubs want to sign him for four years and $27.5 million, Passan notes, but since he can’t actually sign just yet, other teams are still calling on him. Two of those teams, according to two sources to Passan, are the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees.
It is unpredictable when Soler will hit free agency, Passan notes; it could be next week or next month. But when he does, Passan predicts the offers will be for six and seven years rather than four.

The end of the team “yoani” is coming. This post shows a spent team with no more ideas how to lie and denigrate Cuba. For four years they have been trying hard to say something intelligent and failed miserably every time. Not even an obscure “ortega award” couldn’t hide their lack of inspiration.
Of course. Beyond the usual crappy “Cuba is a communist country” cry, there’s very little they could come up with and keep the straight face. After all, whatever they wanted to complain about in Cuba was soemthing people in the usa are already complaining about, and on a scale that makes Cuban problems seem irrelevant.
So a pointless and empty attempt to appear “artistic” above ends up being a self-description with no artistic characteristics at all.
It is, however, quite personal. Who do you think they are trying to depict in this:
“The good intellectual has a file at the United States Interest Section, in hopes of a visa, but he went that day in hat and sunglasses hoping no one would recognize him.”
I see the pin-up granny sneaking in and out of foreign embassies, a different one each time to try and create false impression, she is being contacted by the numerous countries of the world, when in reality, she is collecting her salary from her white “gods” for being such an obedient slave.
All in all, a pointless alegory that reveals more about the team “yoani” than about the “good intellectual”.
Cheap and nasty, as millions have been saying from the start.
As it is to be expected from a traitor of her own country.

Hi…you the world bums who do nothing there all day but sit in front of your computers eating dog food, pizza or rise or pasta, bagels or bread.i left Cuba and I am still in the plane flying and seeing down there the same world as one…
I am sending this message from the plane…because I did see that you are fighting there with your posts…specially against Cuba Libre from Cuba maybe…I understand Cuba Libre and I know what he sees and thinks and why… and I understand the others point of view…They see all the same object, tree (Cuba) but from a different point of views which looks different…illusion…but there is another view…a third one and this one is the real Cuba’s view:
“Let say that Cuba has a beautiful nature and lets forget about the people there…and think that the nature of Cuba is beautiful…so no one can say that it is not true…Now let’s talk about the Cuban people; They are the same as others in North and South America,Africa,Asia and everywhere…not more smart or stupid, not more clean or dirty…not more educated or ignorant…not more good and evil. So far we have seen just the natyre as good but the people, fruits are averige as the rest of the world…and what about the infrastructure? Here we can say much for sure that there are… gethos in Cuba as there are big tall buildings, nice hotels and simple homes and vilas…the same as we see in every country..and does not matter where is more gethos and where is more tall buildings…etc. What about the cars? They are different also; but still in every country you have old and new cars and so you can see in Cuba…doesnt matter what number of the old and the new cars or transportation… are people driving around. The food may be not much different because there are food shops in Cuba as they are in every country but majority of the people everywhere can’t buy food because dont they have money..so still Cubans live as the rest of the world’s people..mostly hungry or fed bad… The same we can say for the education, healthcare, army, police, intelligence…they are the same allmost in every country now so what the hell is the difference? The Media? There is in every country censure and autocensure and you can be in the black lists or red lists…and there are files for all people in every country hunting all of them…and there are medias…maybe 1…or 2 or more it doesnt matter but still they are propaganda in every country…and the brainwashing is worldwide to big that people call the black white and the white black now… Jails are the same also…BUT if there is a big censure soon of the internet in other countries of the world also (elites are working on it maybe) than you have Cuba cloned everywhere so every country will be like Cuba in the so called free media..internet…all going to the nets and many filters and files and lists now. You cant think or say that is not true…
This means that we can not find much difference there between the nations of the world today. And that is what the God thinks maybe and laugh with all the nations because they fight still who is the best and who is the worst..but they are in the same garden…as the good and bad trees…mixed with their damaged fruits…and God says; Lets cut all down…all of them…good and bad and they must be all a big mix now and lets make a mixed juice,a vine with all of them…or votka or brandy or rum or what ever can be made with them…because it is the Harvest time…and 2012 must be a year of the big change…so to all you guys here, all the fruits of the mmixed garden of different trees, sizes and shapes…know that what was is not…there anymore but what is coming is new and different…from what it was…so forget about the past and even the present… but think what you all will be next…what kind of juice…a mixed juice because all the past’s fruits will be not there anymore…the so called the good and bad, all kind of tree’s fruits…they all will be a mixed single juice soon…
I,anton love… brandy so I hope in the end we will get as result of the old garden’s story…and fruit’s production..a nice brandy as a result…not a cheap bad votka or rum or wisky or a bad wine or vinegar…because God will drink and will say;…what the hell is this…(if the mixed juice is bad)?

I dug up the platform upon which the Village Idiot (aka, Cuba libre) based his candidacy for Village Idiot of the Year on Yoaniâs blog. Here are a few of the planks:
(1) The Village Idiot has no respect for himself. Example: The Village Idiot cannot admit when he is wrong. Any self-respecting person admits when he is wrong, apologizes for his mistake, then moves on. Instead, the Village Idiot cannot bring himself to do this and attempts to spin his way out of his lies. Help has convincingly demonstrated that hotel chains operating in Cuba also operate in the United States.
(2) The Village Idiot has no respect for others. Example: The Village Idiot is a self-acknowledged homophobe. In other words, the Village Idiot discriminates based on sexual orientation.
(3) The Village Idiot is a hypocrite. Example: The Village Idiot justifies the continued denial of the right to travel to Yoani because she writes a blog in which she expresses her opinions. According to the Village Idiot, this justifies her continued imprisonment. At the same time, the Village Idiot revels in his right to travel and freely expresses his opinions without fear of losing his right to travel. This is the height of hypocrisy.
(4) The Village Idiot idolizes people who he himself acknowledges to be murderers. Example: The Village Idiot, says â[t]he last rafts that left [Cuba] were not long after the revolution when ‘El Che’ was cleansing Cuba of all the capitalist leeches and maggotts that were still on the island paradise, and believe me they had better try their luck on a makeshift raft than face the rath of âEl Commandante.â â The Village Idiot idolizes the murderers che, fidel and raul. The word âcleansing,â as we all know, is a euphemism for murder. The Village Idiot supports murder and those how commit murder.
(5) The Village Idiot has no respect for human dignity or the sanctity of human life. See items 1-4 above.

MR. OPPENHEIMER ALWAYS PUTS THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE! ONE OF MY FAVORITE JOURNALIST!
MIAMI HERALD: Obama should take the offensive on Cuba- BY ANDRES OPPENHEIMER
So what should Washington do? Instead of rejecting Cubaâs presence, the State Department should have put out a statement saying that Cuban ruler Gen. RaĂșl Castro is more than welcome to attend the summit as an outside guest to answer several questions, starting with for how long Cuba plans to remain the last military dictatorship in the Western Hemisphere.
More specifically, and given diplomatsâ penchant for legal formalities, Gen. Castro should be asked:
Why is Cuba not complying with former President Fidel Castro Ruzâs commitment at the 1996 Sixth Ibero-American Summit in Viña del Mar, Chile, to respect âpolitical pluralism,â âhuman rights,â and âpolitical freedoms?â At that Summit, Castro signed the Vina del Mar Declaration, which specifically calls for âthe freedoms of expression, association and assembly.â
Needless to say, Cuba still has hundreds of political prisoners â two of whom have recently died from hunger strikes â and allows no opposition parties.
Why is Cuba still violating Article 13 of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, which states that âEveryone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his countryâ? To this day, Cubans need a government permit to be able to leave the island.
Prominent Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez, who has denied a permit to visit Brazil earlier this month, wrote in her Twitter account Feb. 3 that âItâs the 19th time that they violate my right to enter and leave my country… I am a prisoner.â
If Gen. Castro responds, as he surely would, that the U.S. âempireâ and its allies are attacking his island because it has become a model society, Obamaâs answer should be very simple: âIf the Cuban people were so happy, and love you so much, why donât you allow free elections?â
My Opinion: The ALBA threat to boycott the Summit of the Americas over Cubaâs attendance is pure political theater. Venezuelan President Hugo ChĂĄvez and his Ecuadoran apprentice, President Rafael Correa, wonât miss the summit: They are demagogues who need to make constant headlines, and who wonât miss a chance to do that at a mega-summit with Obama.
Most likely, they are creating this fuss to place themselves at center-stage at the summit. Rather than staying out, they will probably settle for a vague statement in the summitâs final declaration that they can interpret as an invitation for Cuba to the next summit.
Obama â who, by the way, has just given a red carpet welcome to Chinaâs likely future president Xi Jinping, a leader of another dictatorship â should turn the tables and invite Cuba to the summit provided that Gen. Castro is willing to answer some uncomfortable questions. Cuba wonât accept, and the United States will look much better than it does now.

N.Y. TIMES: Cuba Unleashes the Pent-Up Energy of Real Estate Dreams - By VICTORIA BURNETT
It is a crude market, where househunters rely on word of mouth and prices are based as much on excitement as on any clear sense of property values, according to interviews with homeowners, brokers and experts. Buyers, who at the top end are mainly Cuban Ă©migrĂ©s and Cubans married to foreigners, often declare a fraction of what they pay, and money sometimes changes hands overseas, suggesting that the governmentâs hope of reaping significant tax revenues may be at least partly thwarted.
On a recent day, a stylish flight attendant showed a viewer around the pretty three-bedroom home she hopes will fetch $150,000; a mile away, an elderly widow held out for an offer of $500,000 for her big, unkempt 1950s house â to be deposited in Spain, please.
Many sellers plan to downsize, so they can live better or leave. Victoria Pérez, a retired doctor, put her spacious house and two-bedroom annex on sale last month for $80,000. She hopes to buy something smaller and put aside about $20,000 to live on and visit her daughter in the United States.
âTo earn $20,000 would take 20 years,â she said. âThis opens up a whole world of opportunities.â
Statistics are few, and brokers admit that the curious outnumber the serious. The National Housing Institute processed just 364 sales in the three weeks after the new law took effect.
Steep price tags notwithstanding, experts and brokers say there are signs that the better-off are starting to migrate to areas like Miramar, Havanaâs embassy district, and build vacation homes on the coast.
âThere is definitely a rearrangement going on,â said Carlos GarcĂa Pleyan, a sociologist who worked for decades for the Cuban governmentâs urban planning department.
Other than Cuban Ă©migrĂ©s, he said, the gentrifiers were âthe winners of the Cuba of recent years.â
âPeople who have made money legally, and people who have made money illegally,â he said. âBusinesspeople, maybe a restaurant owner, maybe someone who owns taxis, maybe someone who has made money through corruption.â
âWe shouldnât be worrying so much about how people rearrange themselves,â he added. âWe should be asking ourselves how such large social inequalities have happened.â
While the new market dynamics helped Ms. MartĂnez, some worry they will do little to solve the housing problems faced by many Cubans, whose wallets would not stretch even to buy a $3,000 one-bedroom apartment.
âItâs all very well for those who have money or who have a relative abroad; but if not, forget it,â said Luis MartĂnez, a construction worker (who is not related to Carmen). âMy son is 18. The only way heâll ever leave home is if he marries a girl who has a house.â

Anton,
Your painting was confiscated because Cuban authorities require a Patrimony Tax be paid on any “cultural goods” being taken out of the country. The artist who sold you the painting should have told you and is supposed to give you the proper form. You show the form to the customs official and pay the required tax.

And for those who still won`t open their eyes to see things as they really are, here is some more food for thought.
“On May 6th 2004, US president George W. Bush announced a new set of attacks on the people of Cuba. This culminated in a $59 million plan over two years, placing new travel restrictions on Cuban-Americans and was ultimately aimed at overthrowing Cuba?s independent government. These new attacks caused worldwide outrage and generated increased international momentum in defense of Cuba. In British-Columbia, this new momentum was lead by young people, working people, people of the third world and other oppressed people who came together to defend the gains of the Cuban revolution and Cuba?s right to self-determination. This initiative is Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC).”

Socio-Economic Conditions in Pre-Castro Cuba
In 1955, life expectancy in Cuba was among the highest at 63 years of age; compared to 52 in other Latin American countries, 43 in Asia, and 37 in Africa.
In the 1950’s Cuba was, socially and economically, a relatively advanced country, certainly by Latin American standards and, in some areas, by world standards.
Cuba’s infant mortality rate was the best in Latin America — and the 13th lowest in the world.
Cuba also had an excellent educational system and impressive literacy rates in the 1950’s.
Pre-Castro Cuba ranked third in Latin America in per capita food consumption.
Cuba ranked first in Latin America and fifth in the world in television sets per capita.
Pre-Castro Cuba had 58 daily newspapers of differing political hues and ranked eighth in the world in number of radio stations.

YOUTUBE : CUBAN Documentary - “Wishes on a Falling Star”- While the Castro brothers face their certain end, an uncertain future hangs over the island. Some people are afraid, many cannot wait, but all shudder and hope that the changes will be positive.
This documentary leads the audience through the discovery of this hope, through a tourist’s camera which looks to be turned off and oblivious to the conversation at hand, yet is focused on candidly capturing each person’s wishes. There is the old guerrillero who took part in the revolution, the lady who met Che Guevara and lives thanks to the government social card, and also the young boys and girls — those who wish to make a career within the rules, as well as those who only try to escape abroad. Clandestine underground shops, businessmen experienced in all things illegal, dodgy pimps, mothers who force their daughters into selling their bodies — the hidden face of the State which welcomes tourists into its luxury resorts is openly displayed beyond censorship’s control. One special guide is Yoani Sanchez, the independent blogger, a leader of the new, peaceful revolution — the revolution of ideas. The internet is its main instrument, while the government attempts to limit computer use with any means possible in a pushing and pulling of ideals. In the interview, recorded in a secret location, the young writer speaks about her country’s ruin, and where Raul’s reforms have no effect on everyday life. Castro’s supporters and dissidents, young and old — none deceive themselves that the star of the revolution will shine on for much longer. And this is what this project focuses on: the wishes on a falling star.

Congratulations to Yoani for great posts. Cuba Libre - you are ridiculous. Why should Yoani state the “accomplishments of the revolutionary government” to enable her to come and go from her country?? You have the freedom to say what you like in Canada and they’ll still let you leave, and come back. When are you moving to Cuba??
Hypocrite, hypocrite, hypocrite, hypocrite!!!!

“Long live the Cuban Revolution”. Here is some reading for those who still doubt.
“What Cuba has been able to achieve since 1959 is simply astonishing. Prior to the Revolution, the average life expectancy in Cuba was 58.8 years. Disease was rampant, as was illiteracy. Now the average Cuban lives to be more than 77 years old! Today education and health care are free at every level for all Cubans. The Cuban education and health care systems are generally regarded as among the best in the world.”
The truth will be heard,

This is a great post by Yoani. My favorite sentence is “But when he takes a couple of drinks he wonders if he scaled the artistic heights because of his real talent, or because of the massive exile of those who could have been his competitors.”Â
I think the piece is fundamentally an indictment, but at the same time it is recognition of the impossibility, the absurdity, of the situation.Â

Maybe if instead of repeatedly posting lies and idiocies in here, if you used all your talent as a writer to state the accomplishments of the Revolutionary government, you too would be allowed to come and go from the island as you wished. Imagine for one second if you stopped accepting bribes from the imperialist monster to defamate your government, and instead say things as they really are in Cuba.

Dear Anton, I’m so sorry that your beautiful painting was confiscated by those horrible Cuban bureaucrats. In a country where people lack freedom and basic human rights, your painting is just so important.

Alan Gross should be interviewed for the world to see. Cuba is holding this man hostage. An interview and in his own words would expose the abusive system that governs Cuba. I hope the vatican has plans to visit this man and hear his story and witness his ordeal.
Cuba, before the internet was the master of spinning lies, now the truth can be known.

And that intellectual is Yoani…and other million humans, world citizens like her…trying to be right, true but is imposible so there must be in the middle of the two roads;white and black…be a grey path or party and make both happy. GTood post…
I am just leaving the aeroport of Cuba….but the paiting that I did buy from some artist shop like this in the photo…was taken from me from the aeroport security men.He ask me to show some recide and I said that the guy who sold me the painting did not give me one.The security guy ask me to pay for the puinting again but I refused.I said to him that this does not make any sense. Why I pay again for the same painting that I just paid once today. He said;”Than I take it”…and he took the painting from me, my painting…and he send me to a room to sign some papers and he did put the painting inside a blue bag and closed it well…so he took it…he stole it from me….I did not like that brutal robery and evil action… because in that beautiful painting was the beach of Cuba and the sun above the sea,a beautiful sun rise or set and he just put it in the dark bag…like he hated the sun,the light…the beach and Cuba, his country…What a crime. I felt..I liked to punish him…to shoot him in the spot..to execute that thief…or to fire him from his post for corruption because I did not like to see my painting, the sun jailed…or being in the prison..inside the dark bag.And became so mad and I thought that I am in a big corrupted society where the people work less and most of them, the lazy parasites…like this fat guy…a son of a past black slave…who are thiefs…and just controll, spy and rob each other the same as they, the billion parasites do in the rest of the jungle world…the prison planet…but i wanted to leave Cuba right way..and before I did that I bought a botle of white rum and I did drink it all before I left…I was thinking that Cuba beautiful paradise needs to be free from these monsters…parasites…eating the tourists gifts…the visitors of the paradise where was put a gorilla in its gate…I said; when I come next time I will fire all Cubans burocrats and maybe all the Cubans who dont like the sun…who refuse its light…who like the darkness and I was asking seating in the plane looking Cuba from the window; What is the difference from Cuba and the rest of the world? NOTHING…the same kind of people and society and elite and burocracy and the same of actions, bad actions, evil and dark one…and I said that the dark world is now dark everywhere..and it needs light…the sun…the day…so the God is needed to say again;…let there be light

ALAN GROSS DOES NOT SPEAK SPANISH! SOME SPY! AND WHERE IS THIS PROOF? WHERE IS IT COMMING FROM? CAN WE SEE IT?
THE JEWISH DAILY: What Did Alan Gross Do in Cuba?-Reports Show Accused Spy Knew the Risks He Was Taking-By Paul Berger
Nevertheless, Jewish groups continue to back Gross.
âOur position has not changed, nor is there reason for it to change,â said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, which has campaigned on Grossâs behalf. âI have credibility in our government and the [Gross] family, and donât have credibility just because an AP story appears. Letâs move on.â
Foxman insinuated that the AP report was based on misinformation put out by the Cuban government, a âtotalitarian, antidemocratic, dictatorshipâ that âfosters and has fostered internationally anti-Semitism, which is an enemy of Israel and the Jewish people.â
âWhy should I take [the Cuban governmentâs] word,â Foxman said, âas opposed to our government, the secretary of state, members of Congress and [Grossâs] family?â
Halber said Gross was being painted as a âJames Bondâ figure so that he can be used as âa pawnâ to secure the release of the Cuban Five, Cuban agents arrested in the U.S. in 2001 on spying charges.
He said the increased publicity could work in Grossâs favor and that vigils outside the Cuban Interests Section in Washington would continue.

JULIO

Bravo, Yoani. A challenge that faces us all, but particularly those who live in prisons like Cuba.
I hope more overcome their fear like you have.
